MacBook Pro

SNES4Life

Yeah I'm that guy that owns a MacBook Pro. :/ I currently have the MacBook Pro Late 2011 Model#A1278. On the bright side I AM running bootcamp with Windows 7.

With that said, is it worth upgrading to the Mid 2012 MacBook Pro? It's not the retina display and I believe its the Ivy Bridge CPU. I'm thinking about upgrading because someone is interested in my macbook. I might let it go for 700. What are your thoughts?

Some thoughts as to why i might want to upgrade is because I've had this laptop ever since 2011. If I buy a new one it might be in a new condition. Might last me longer? Or do you guys think the specs is not worth the upgrade?

Looking forward to hearing from you guys.

Thanks!

Well, let's look at the specs, what model are you going for specifically + what model do you have?

I've owned the early 2011 and the mid 2012 15" MBP's and I now own a mid 2014 rMBP 13". There really is not enough of an upgrade between 2011 and 2011's models to justify selling your current one and getting another. If you were going for a 2013/2014 rMBP, that would be one thing, but otherwise it's not worth it in my opinion.

Its not really worth the upgrade, the GPU is better if you are going with the 15" or 17" models, but the GPU isn't that great by todays standards and the CPU is still Sandy Bridge.

I don't see upgrading to be a valid point if you aren't getting Intel Iris graphics or better and a Retina Display, as I can't stand low res notebook displays, even if it is a 1600*900 model

I currently have the late 2011 model macbook pro with the Sandy Bridge CPU http://www.everymac.com/systems/apple/macbook_pro/specs/macbook-pro-core-i5-2.4-13-late-2011-unibody-thunderbolt-specs.html

I was thinking about upgrading to the Mid 2012 Model with the Ivy Bridge CPU. http://www.everymac.com/systems/apple/macbook_pro/specs/macbook-pro-core-i5-2.5-13-mid-2012-unibody-usb3-specs.html Because i feel that my current laptop has been used for quite some time now. Looking to stay fresh with my electronics. lol Wondering if this 2012 model is worth the upgrade since it'll be around $300 to upgrade if i can sell my macbook.

I have to say it really depends Upgrading to a 2012 model, you will notice nothing. There will be no tangible performance increase, not even a boost in battery life, as far as I know.

It all depends on what you want. Personally I would take the $700, sell the Macbook and put the money into a small gaming laptop, say for instance an MSI GE40 (super-light and reasonably powerful) but to be honest, that's just what I'd do. I have nothing against Macs, they're just not for me. If you're someone who needs to have a Macbook, then go for it, if not, there are dozens upon dozens of good options.

Thanks for the quick feedback! I have to agree with you! I looked at the 2013/2014 but i couldn't justify getting it because of price and not enough storage. i still want to run bootcamp and I feel with the SSD that comes with it is just too small :/

If you were to get a rMBP, I'd advise for either the 512GB or 1TB flash models. I have the 512GB and love it, but of course, it's much more expensive than a 128 or 256Gb model.

True that! I guess I just found out the real reason why I want to upgrade. I think its because this laptop has been used for last 4 years, and i thought maybe if i can spend around 300 more maybe the new laptop could last me just as long but knowing that its a newer laptop.. Not sure if that made sense. LOL :/

This is the best 2012 MacBook Pro that you can get. The 2.7 was the very best i7 sold that year and it had 1GB of VRAM.

MBPR13" might be a worthwhile upgrade but certainly not the 2012. If someone is offering you $700, you could easily buy a used MBPR for $900-1000.
