Getting slow speeds on Powerline

Rovert19

Hi everyone,

So our new internet just got installed today and I was very excited to get 60mb down. Slight problem though is that I am only getting about 20-25mb/s with my powerline kit. I tried testing a straight connection to the router and was found that was getting the full 60mb/s. With our old service, i was able to get the full 25mb/s speed with my powerline kit. Can anyone provide any insight on why this is happening? Theoretically powerline should be able to do anything under 100mb/s.

Running a cable straight to the router is not an option. The router is downstairs while the computer is upstairs. I don't want to run a 50 foot cable down the stairs.

Yes, both units are plugged directly into the wall.

House is relatively new, about 15 years.

Speed is very dependent on the kit, distance run, and the quality of wiring (wiring shouldn't be a problem though).

I know there are different types of powerline adapters. Some can only handle up to a certain speed. Can you link which adapter you have?

It's weird, I was using the same kit with our previous internet service and got the full 25mb/s. Now with the new service I'm getting about 20 of the 60mb/s. I'd say the distance between the the adapters is about 30 feet.

LOL, that's the same exact adapter I use. Would it hurt if you bought another powerline adapter and just test that connection?

Interferance? Moved any plugs around with your existing setup?

Check surrounding plugs (try to give the powerline a dedicated 1 plug to wall socket link), don't run the powerline with a powerboard for example...

When shared, mine cripples.

When standalone, full speed.

Maximums - Asus Z97-K /w i5 4690 Bclk @106.9Mhz * x39 = 4.17Ghz, 8GB of 2600Mhz DDR3,.. Gigabyte GTX970 G1-Gaming @ 1550Mhz

I do have another set. I tried it and it was slightly slower than the TP LInk ones unfortunately.

Both adapters have their own individual socket. Left the 2nd plug on each socket open.

Such a bummer, was looking forward to get 60mb/s down!

The TP-Link FAQ proved pretty useful to me a few times...

http://www.tp-link.com/en/article/?faqid=409

Also, take note on Step 2:

Please check whether there are electrical equipments which have electromotor inside around the powerline adapters. Such equipments can be air-condition, washing-machine, electric-fans etc. Please move such equipment to other place or move powerline adapters away from such equipment.
What is more, you can buy a power outlet which has surge protector function and plug such equipments to the outlet to avoid interference.

So today I did another speed test. I managed to get 33mb/s which is a bit of an improvement. Don't think I've changed anything though.

Update- I tried plugging the 2 adapters into the same socket. I was able to get full speed so I'm assuming it's the distance. Although it isn't very far, maybe 30 feet.

You're affected by what else is plugged in, quality of the wiring, distance, the average chipsets used in the TP Link units and most of all, the physical connection on the unit. I see TP Link and Netcomm advertising up to 600Mb/s however they only have 100Mb/s ports..?

It's limited to 100mb because Ethernet ports have 10/100/1000 standards. Since this kit only has a 100mb/s port, it's limited to 100mb/s. There's another TP-Link kit that is 600mb/s but has a gigabit port, so that one gets the full speed.

Ok, I've done some extensive testing and I think I've found a solution. I first tried to plugging them into the same socket. I was delighted to find out that I was getting full speed, which is safe to assume that it is the house wiring that is causing the slow down. I then put 1 adapter back in my room upstairs and started testing each of the sockets downstairs. The first 3 were yielding the same results until I got to one that was somewhat adjacent to my bedroom meaning on the same side of the house, although this socket was actually further away than my initial socket. I managed to get my full 60mb/s and then some. But with this said, i had to run a 25 foot ethernet cable from the modem to the socket across the living room, which kind of defeats the purpose of powerline, although it is still preferable to running a direct line down the stairs which could be dangerous.

Interesting to note, the best possible combination actually got me up to 90mb/s while I am only paying for 60mb/s. I consistently get 77mb/s in my bedroom. I am with Rogers in case anyone was interested.

Thanks for all your help! I'm so glad to have decent internet after having so many issues with my previous provider. Here's a speed test I just did.
