Universal Flash Storage is here, promises doubling of speeds

A bit more than a year ago, Toshiba and Qualcomm announced they are planning on adopting this new standard, but since nothing happened after that, our lord and saviour SAMSUNG is here to the rescue, adopting newer, faster standards, to get rid of bottlenecks in our beloved handhelds!

They have announced that they are producing chips based on not 1, but 2.0 version of the standard! They come in 3 immense capacities, 32GB, 64GB, and yes, for all the enthusiasts, ONE HUNDRED TWENTY FUCKING EIGHT GIGABYTES!! Not just doubling speed (we will come to that later), but also their existing capacities.

Now onto the speeds, prepare to be blown away.

 

SAMSUNG claims these chips can do mindblowing 19K read IOPS (the puny eMMC 5.1 can only do 11K, 4.5 can do 3.5K) and yes, youre hearing it right, sequential performance is rated at SSD LEVELS!* (*disclaimer: SSD levels can mean anything from 300MB/s to 2GB/s).
And not only that, but power consumption drops to the basement, with a whopping 50% decrease compared to eMMC!

 

SAMSUNG is shipping this as a standalone, as well as an ePoP version, so even more awesome points to it!

Every major advancement in data storage in the last 2 decades has been branded as a sony patent. Tape> CD... VHS>DVD>Blu ray... etc

Well more storage may be one of the rare things that will cause me to buy a new phone before my normal upgrade cycle of 5 years passes. Good stuff. Though I'm not going to buy a Samsung phone to get it.

Its not going to be exclusive to Samsung. just they get it first, because vertical integration. but be sure samsung will sell those ePoP modules to others as much as they can
