[The Best/Or good Anti-Virus for a computer?]

Akimurai

Well, I recently got a new desktop, I got malwarebytes, however, I don't know which Anti-Virus to get. AVG seems promising, but is there any other recommendations? I don't want one that is heavy, where it'd make somethings lag, or whatever. Personally, I don't think i;ll be needing one, cause I don't download from weird sites, or whatever, but you can never be too safe I guess? Anyways, hope this is the right place to post, just like to hear the communities opinions ^^

Avast!

I really like its UI. Blends in well in Windows 8.1. Runs well and is very light. Has an App, and Browser Integration works well. Quick Scan is quick, too.

I will second that, I use AVG Internet Security, and enjoy it. Well maybe not ENJOY it, but at least I havn't wanted to feed it to a digital goat like most of the other AV's I've used in the past, lol

Sounds nice, should I install it to my SSD, or HDD? (Sorry, first time having a real desktop) xD

I spend most of my day at work dealing with computers that have malware, I'd recommend MalwareBytes and your head.

what size SSD?

IMO all programs should be installed on an SSD with your OS just to make installation and OS management simple, cause then you dont need to mess up directories and links and stuff

if you have a 128GB SSD or less then you will probably need to put it on your HDD cause 128GB is kinda small

You could just run Malwarebytes once a week to ensure that you're not infected. After a couple of weeks without anything found you'll feel more confident in your ability to avoid malware. If you want active protection and are going to pay for one then I would recommend trying to get your hands on a Malwarebytes Premium lifetime license. I don't need protection as its nearly impossible for me to become infected (lets just say I've walked in the shadows) but I still run Malwarebytes Premium for the hell of it. The scanner is extremely fast (as if it was written in Assembler) and it's not annoying at all. Plus its backed by one of the best databases available. If you want free protection then I would recommend Avira. It's has one of the strongest free definition databases (better than AVG and Avast) around. One thing I can say is Avast is one that I no longer recommend people. It use to be badass back in its v3 stages (back when it had a blue circle icon). Now days its an annoying nuisance to the point where you want to just uninstall it and run nothing. You cant even fart in front of your computer without it throwing a flag. Literally its one of worst when it comes to false positives.

For free AV you should either get Avira or Bitdefender.  Bitdefender is more lightweight, but it doesn't give you many options in terms of control or how it works.

If you want a paid one then either Bitdefender or Kaspersky.  I would probably go with Kaspersky just for the fact that their team has found a lot of security issues in the past.  You can also check out AVTEST, a third-party company that rates AVs.  (Bitdefender and Kaspersky are the top 2)

I just use MSE. Mainly because the best antivirus you can have is avoiding dodgy websites and unknown applications (game patches, etc...)

The shop I work in, all of our techs will swear by Avast. In their experience the real world detection rate of Avast is pretty high. Better than most(if not all) of the alternatives. Avira's pretty up there too.

But as is said elsewhere in this thread, the best AV is you.
