Midnitewarrior4

just bought my 1tb wd blue and i have about 10 hours on it and since i installed it, it has been making some noises every once in a while almost like a ginding sound but its not really grinding. has anyone with a wd blue ever had noises with theirs or were they silent ? im almost ready to chuck a 5 year old hdd thats just sitting in my basement in just to see how loud that one is compared to my 1tb. any help is appreciated

Make a backup now. It sounds like the R/W head is having problems.

HDDs either fail in the first few months or after many years of hard work. Your HDD sounds like the first one.

Not close to silent but quiet enough that it isn't making annoying grinding noises.

If you only just bought it recently, go through the retailer for an exchange since it sounds like a defective drive. Only RMA it if you're beyond that point -- most retailers allow up to 30 days for exchange or refund.

Hey Midnitewarrior4,

Sorry to hear about the bad experience with WD Blue. You could try running WD Data Lifeguard Diagnostic tool on the drive to see its health status. (http://products.wdc.com/support/kb.ashx?id=8pHbkr) Run both tests to check the drive's S.M.A.R.T. status as well as for any bad sectors. I would also advise you to back up any important data and go for a RMA procedure.

bought the parts on boxing day but just recently built the pc due to exams and such, so i doubt i could do a retailer exchange

thanks for the advice. i have watched some videos on the sounds that failing drives sound like, but mine doesn't give the usual warning like clicking or having trouble spinning up. i was just wondering what a normal healthy hdd should sound like since this is my "first" desktop and i dont know if it is just the normal sounds of the read/write head moving or if it is failing

I would still run the diagnostic utility and probably a benchmarking program to see how well it performs. Try connecting it externally (SATA to USB cable, docking station, enclosure) and see if the sounds persist. WD Blue drives should be pretty quiet. Could you post screenshots of the diagnostic tool and the bechmarking program once you've run them?

According to the test, the drive should be safe to use. I would recommend testing the drive on another computer or plugging it externally to see if it still makes the sound and if it does, go for a RMA procedure.

WD Blue works rather quiet compared to more performance-oriented drives but still makes more noise compared to energy-efficient drives. It really depends on how quiet of a build one has and what levels of noise one is used to. WD Blue's noise levels should be between 29 and 30 dBA depending on if it's on idle or during seeking mode, as per the drive's spec sheet: http://products.wdc.com/support/kb.ashx?id=SZgnlf(this is for all versions of WD Blue).
