Cheapest Transcoding Capable Plex Server

Loohi

Hoi

Alright, so im currently running my plex server off my gaming rig, and when Im gaming, my GF watches plex on the TV and my gaming rig does not feel a thing.

While this has been a good solution for a while, im looking for a dedicated, low power, 24/7, quiet compact plex server.

I've been looking into 2 things:

  1. Intel NUC
  2. Mac Mini

And honestly, the Intel NUCs are negligibly cheaper than the latest baseline mac mini

So im quite tempted to just buy a mac mini, and save myself the hassle of potential failure.

What would you guys recommend/do?  What are you guys using?

Oh yes, all my media is hosted on NAS.

Thanks! :)

Why bother with a new machine if your desktop doesn't have any issues with it?

Good question, basically, I want the freedom to reboot, upgrade, etc when people are watching TV :)

I also want to avoid down time if my gaming rig breaks down!

I'm assuming your NAS can not run plex? I would check to see if it can.

If not I would recommend the Intel NUC just because again I am assuming your gaming rig is running a windows os. Will probably be an easier transition.
