What are the downsides to using SATA splitters?

You mean power splitters right?

Well if the cable is crappy and cheap it could melt and short out if youre powering lots of power hungry things off of one splitter (something like a GPU)

You mean the Y-splitter for the power? Nothing, theres plenty of power on a single cable for power delivery.

I don't know why, but I was under the assumption that they could be used to connect more stuff to an existing sata port on a mobo.
