NVIDIA to restore overclocking in mobile GPUs

Source 1: linustechtips.com OP: qwertywarrior

Source 2: techpowerup.com

  • received a lot of pressure from users who were angry about having OCing disabled on their GTX 900M series GPUs

  • happened in the latest driver update

  • restore set to happen in March

  • if users want overclocking right now, they can revert to the older GeForce 344.75 drivers

NVIDIA have been hit with a class action suit over the GTX 970

Source 1: linustechtips.com OP: TheSLSAMG

Source 2: pcworld.com

  • suit claims NVIDIA misled customers about the capabilities of the GTX 970

  • claims that the last half GB runs 80 percent slower than advertised and can cause images to stutter on high resolutions and cause poor in-game performance

  • for some reason Gigabyte is the only OEM being named as a defendant (in this article they are apparently identified as “Giga-Byte”)

  • NVIDIA declined to comment about the suit, and Gigabyte couldn’t be reached

  • lawsuit seeks a jury trial, damages that apply under California law

  • filed on behalf of all US consumers that purchased a GTX 970

  • judge has to approve is as a class-action suit before it can proceed

Apple entering the car game? Rumored to be buying Tesla?

  • Apple hiring experts from the automotive industry for research lab

  • Tim Cook approved the project close to a year ago

  • Steve Zadesky, former Ford executive, leading the group

  • Apple is working on something that will “give Tesla a run for its money”

  • Zadesky “was given permission to create a 1,000-person team and poach employees from different parts of the company.”

  • attempting to lure Tesla employees away with big bonuses

  • ALSO

  • angel investor Jason Calacanis claims that the “stars are aligning perfectly” for Apple to acquire Tesla for $75 billion within 18 months

  • Calacanis admits he “has no inside information for either company,” but points to Apple’s newfound interest in building cars and Tim Cook’s “obsession” with renewable energy

  • “the two companies seem like a perfect match”

  • he speculates that Apple’s reputation for producing quality products makes it one of the few companies that Elon would even consider selling to

  • “No one else in the world could actually make a run at Tesla, because they either don’t have the cash and, most importantly, they don’t have the ability to give assurances to Elon that they won’t f*** it up. Apple’s design team, software, and global distribution would actually LEVEL Tesla up.”

Should we unplug our chargers each night?

Source 1: linustechtips.com OP: iHammmy

Source 2: techradar.com

  • standby power usage (when your charger is plugged in but not charging anything) is down below a single watt, below half a watt for many electronics

  • according to a Cambridge professor, unplugging to save that half watt equals an annual savings of one hot bath worth of energy

  • “obsessively switching off the phone charger is like bailing the Titanic with a teaspoon.” Professor MacKay, Cambridge

  • the cost of having a device plugged in after it is finished charging is about 10x that of standby - higher, but still not extremely significant

  • modern chargers cut the power once a phone reaches 100%, due to the volatility of overcharged lithium ion batteries

  • phones are trickle charged through the night, which degrades the battery life slightly more than usual

  • TL:DR it’s not overly dangerous as long as use the supplied charger, but it does affect the longevity of your phone’s battery. however, this is a problem that is closed to being solver, with quick charging batteries and other means of recharging batteries (eg. body movement) getting closer to market

  • recommendation is still to charge your phone after work rather than through the night, take it off charger when it’s at 100%

Father makes son play through video game history, chronologically

Source 1: medium.com Source: Friend

Source 2: kotaku.com

  • over 10 years, Andy Baio performed this “experiment” on his son

  • “If you have a kid, why not run experiments on them? It’s like running experiments on a little clone of yourself! And almost always probably legal.”

  • great quotes in the medium article like “My original plan was to raise him thinking he was living in a computer simulation, but sadly, my wife vetoed it.”

  • didn’t buy him the latest and greatest games - made him “work his way to modernity”

  • played through the history of gaming, starting with 1979’s Galaxian

  • calls it a “decade-long experiment in forced nostalgia and questionable parenting”

  • meant to give his son an appreciation of older “or cruder new” games that he otherwise may have dismissed as relics

  • the result was that his son became very good at old, more “difficult” video games

  • “Eliot just beat the first Zelda, entirely by himself. I only helped by showing him a map of Dungeon 9. That’s my boy!”

  • experiment ended when they got to games released around Eliot’s birth (2004) like Katamari Damacy and Shadow of the Colossus

  • Eliot has “developed a strong taste for roguelikes, [and] become frighteningly good at video games, to the point where he can complete Spelunky via hell and reach the Nuclear Throne”

  • more importantly, he can appreciate the game for what it is, not how much money was spent on it or how flashy it looks

AT&T Will Charge Gigabit Customers More If They Want Privacy

Source 1: linustechtips.com OP: Qwertywarrior

Source 2: nextpowerup.com

  • now competing with Google Fiber in some markets like Kansas City

  • same price as Google Fiber, but customers must pay more if they don’t want AT&T to monitor their web browsing

  • $29/month to avoid AT&T’s “Internet Prefrences,” which go past internet privacy settings to collect private data

  • AT&T claims it monitors GigaPower accounts to provide advertisements

  • even if customers pay the extra $29/month, they’re not entirely immune from AT&T snooping

  • “AT&T may collect and use web browsing information for other purposes, as described in our Privacy Policy, even if you do not participate in the Internet Preferences program”

[Rumour - WCCFTech] AMD R9 390X

Source 1: linustechtips.com OP: Gpuxpert

Source 2: wccftech.com

  • Coming With Cooler Master tweaked Liquid Cooler (designed by Asetek)

  • reference R9 390X will ship with a closed-loop liquid cooler design

  • non-reference designs may ship with air coolers from OEMs

  • tough to say whether this will actually happen as this cooling system has proven to be quite effective on the R9 295X2

  • sources point to a retail availability of late March or early April, based on shipping documents

  • apparently AMD has “something crazy” they’re working on for GDC, possibly a preview of the R9 390X?

  • estimated at almost 2.5 times the 4K performance of the GTX 770 (weird comparison, no official benchmarks to back it up)

Sprint supporting title 2

Source 1: linustechtips.com OP: Spartaman64

Source 2: engadget.com

Source 3: arstechnica.com

  • AT&T and Verizon claim that if the FCC increases regulation of internet service to enforce net neutrality then they'd have reason to slow down investing in new upgrades.

  • GigaOm points out a letter to the FCC from Sprint saying that it doesn't think the application of Title II classification under the Communications act (treating internet like a utility, like phone service) will cause any problems.

  • Stephen Bye, Sprint's Chief Technology Officer writes that "Sprint will continue to invest in data networks regardless of whether they are regulated by Title II, Section 706.

  • T-Mobile CEO John Legere who previously tweeted that Title II qualifies as "heavy" regulation said "Sprint has shown enormous courage by daring to say openly in Washington what every other major carrier has admitted on Wall Street."

iWatch was originally intended as a health monitoring device [says WSJ]

Source 1: linustechtips.com OP: Prastupok

Source 2: theverge.com

Source 3: wsj.com

  • The Apple Watch was initially intended as exactly that sort of multifunctional health-monitoring device, but the sensors available just weren't good enough.

  • Heart activity, blood pressure, and stress levels were among the things Apple wanted to track with the Watch.

  • Problems with tracking on dry skinned and hairy people.

  • WSJ's source describe the four-year Watch project as a "black hole" that sucked in resources from elsewhere in the company.

  • Additional regulatory hurdles could also arise if Apple were to try and interpret its data to suggest health advice.

  • Apple appears confident that it will sell many “conventional” Watches and has apparently ordered between five and six million units to be manufactured for the first three months of availability.

  • Features like measuring blood oxygen levels and blood pressure are said to only have been shelved at Apple

  • Reportedly resembles the sort of fun you have playing with silly stuffed animals.

  • Push the large button on the belly, ask a question and Watson, sorry, GreenDino, will come back with the answer.

  • Elemental Path's pitch here is that, as your child ages, the toy will monitor their progress and ask more sophisticated questions and provide more detailed answers.

  • IBM's involvement in the project is purely to let the company connect to Watson Developer Cloud, one of the ways in which big blue hopes to make money from its supercomputer.

DNA Hard Drive

Source 2: news.nationalgeographic.com.au

Source 4: sciencealert.com

  • scientists have built a DNA time capsule that's capable of safely preserving all of our data for more than a million years

  • 1 gram of DNA is capable of holding 455 exabytes

  • Storing information on DNA is also surprisingly simple - researchers just need to program the A and C base pairs of DNA as a binary '0', and the T and G as a '1'.

  • In 2013 scientists managed to sequence genetic code from 700,000-year-old horse bones

  • the team encode 83 kilobytes of data. They then encapsulated the DNA into tiny glass spheres, which were around 150 nanometres in diameter.

  • researchers compared these glass spheres against other packaging methods by exposing them to temperatures of between 60 and 70 degrees Celsius - conditions that replicated the chemical degradation that would usually occur over hundreds of years, all crammed into a few destructive weeks.

  • the DNA inside the glass spheres could easily be extracted using a fluoride solution, and the data on it could still be read.

  • the team predicts that data stored on DNA could survive over a million years if it was stored in temperatures below -18C or 2000 years at 10 C

  • And despite advances in sequencing technology, errors still arise from DNA sequencing.

  • The team used Reed-Solomon Codes to correct for errors, which help researchers transmit data over long distances (additional information is attached to the actual data, to help people read it on the other end.).

  • it cost around US$1,500 just to encode the 83 kilobytes of data used in this study.

  • Wants to start his own internet that uses the blockchain.

  • Last year he launched “Mega chat”, which gives better protection that Hangouts or Skype.

  • Kim believes MegaNet will be immune to global mass surveillance.

  • Not based on IP addresses.

  • The blockchain used by bitcoin will play an important role.

  • Mr. Dotcom continued to inform his followers that they "would be surprised" about "how much idle storage and bandwidth capacity mobile phones have", adding that "MegaNet will turn that idle capacity into a new network".

  • "MegaNet won't rely exclusively on mobile networks at launch. But the more powerful phones become the more data & traffic they will carry."

Similar projects:

  • Maidsafe (Massive Array of Internet Disks - Secure Access For Everyone) is another decentralized internet. Open source and hosted on GitHub.

    • The key part of MaidSafe is its SAFE network, powered by its participants' computers, which means, instead of specialized servers, data are stored and distributed by a network of internet-connected computers.

  • PROJECT MAELSTROM — P2P NETWORK TO HOST WEBSITES

    • Made by Bittorrent

    • According to BitTorrent, the distributed browser could help maintain a more neutral Internet. If an ISP can’t identify where traffic is originating from, then it can’t suppress certain sites accessed from a browser like Maelstrom.

  • ZeroNet — DECENTRALIZED WEBSITES HOSTING USING BIT TORRENT NETWORK

    • At the beginning of new year, a new open source project known as ZeroNet launched that aims to deliver a decentralized web platform using Bitcoin cryptography and the BitTorrent network.

Already posted this on youtube but this really belongs here on the forum were a civil discussion is much easier and educated.

Just had a conversation with a friend about the whole older games being better idea. And the highlight of the conversation is that we tend to think old games are better as a result of our bias. When we say we remember old games we are really just remember good old games.

Bad games get released all the time but we forget them relatively quickly since they aren't memorable unless we played them less than a few years ago or they were so terrible that they just get engraved in our heads as the worst game(s) ever.

Therefore when doing an old games vs new games test you need to remember the old games that were average-bad as well as the absolutely mind-blowing experiences that we all cling to for nostalgic purposes.

Basically while I love Knights of the Old Republic (1+2), Jedi Knight (Outcast+Academy), and Mario 64 I also love The Witcher 2, Civilization V, Chivalry, Mount and Blade Warband, Endless Legend, Star Citizen, Sins of a Solar Empire, Assassin's Creed (entire series although 2-R, and BF were the best), and so on. I'd also list Empire at War, Forces of Corruption, Battlefront 2, and Mass Effect (1+2, 3 was okay) but they came out in between what I consider old and new so I'll just mention them as good games that are well worth playing. Also they further prove my point that there are good games all the time!

TLDR: We remember things with a bias towards the good instead of being completely unbiased and as such we will present others with the same good that we remember instead of giving them a fully unbiased selection of old games. At least that's my hypothesis as to why we think old games are better and why this experiment may have been slightly flawed. Linus please make sure you are more scientific! Or I'll just have to wait another decade to run my own experiments to either disprove or prove my hypothesis.

Awesome show today guys, thanks for the news! Was really hoping to hear some news about the next titan or the 980 TI, but hearing about the R9 390 is just as good! Very scary to think that cards that came out 2 years ago could still be part of AMD's line up.  Wouldnt that be like re-badged nvidia 600 series being part of nvidia's current series of cards? weeeeeird.

Good show but maybe I'm starting not too relate to you guys as much. Because my first console was the Psx and we are a sony household so it's sad to hear the stuff about them. And I never played zelda dobt have any family members who has either. I never really liked Nintendo just the game boy. Never really played Mario cart or smash brothers or whatever so I don't understand the playing the old games part. Maybe the kid may want to know the prequels to Metal gear 4 by playing metal gear solid but I don't know. That's just my opinion but I dunno man your losing me withe recent rants and barley talking about the topics I wanted to hear about. I don't know man but I'm still a fan man.

Why do you guys like Nintendo so much? Is it just because I can in during the Playstation days as a 90s kid?

I don't understand why you were that critical of AMD potentially having three "generations" of GCN cards in the 300 series. Nvidia is still selling Fermi-based cards. That's before GCN even existed.

But rebadges do suck. I'm sure it wouldn't be a thing if TSMC got their shit together and moved on from ancient 28nm.

Luke: "He's got the AIDS."

Linus: "How would you know?"

Luke: "Oh I would know."

That was so awkward for Linus. Lol!

Well, the guys going to Mars may actually get the chance to come back eventually... it's possible that a way to bring them back could be found in their lifespan.

Don't ask to ask, just ask... please 🤨

Can't wait to see it.

@Victorious Secret

You Apple biased.

I'm not, Apple insider is. I take the headlines I read, I see no reason to change them unless I write original content. Yahoo Techs was more accurate but I didn't read that as my source.
