Operation: Intel Upgrade

EarthboundHero

Hello ladies and gentlemen! So I have had my 7850K for around a year now, and seeing as it's bottle necking my R9 280 pretty badly, I figured it was time to upgrade. So I have chosen to upgrade to an i5-4690K, an MSI Gaming 5 motherboard, and a Noctua NH-D15. Everything else is staying the same as it was previously. Right now I have the motherboard only (Pictures below) I should have the CPU and cooler by mid-March. Not a very eventful build log, however some people wanted me to make it. Here, I will document some benchmarks moving over to Intel, as well as temps. Though as APU temps are currently very difficult to measure I won't have anything to compare to. If you'd like to be tagged whenever I update this build log, please let me know. I will leave you with my gallery now. (Current build in my signature.)

Edit 02/27/2015: So, I got the 4690K and NH-D15 yesterday and put everything together and installed Windows 8.1 Pro. Pictures will be below as well as the rest of the benchmarks. I think this will be the last update for a while. Until maybe a RAM upgrade. Enjoy guys. (Unboxing videos will be added tomorrow.)

Edit 02/28/2015: Added those unboxing videos.

So, it turns out my Uncle had a G3258. He let me use it to test the board. Here are the results.

All the parts.

bqDAiqG.jpg

CPU Installed.

JWoIRsi.jpg

CPU Cooler installed. (This was a pain for some reason.)

FSR9Lqv.jpg

RAM installed. (Looks a lot better than I thought it would, might keep it.)

Jumbled mess of wires.

u8drpMY.jpg

IT WORKED!! (After a couple appearances of error code 99.)

qysHf0N.jpg

The box of the 4690K. Looks pretty nice.

MVehnui.jpg

Here's the processor in the box.

Jgl2iSs.jpg

I kinda forgot to take pictures during this one, sorry about that.

Box of the NH-D15. Again very nice, and huge.

Z3LC3wk.jpg

The beautiful packing of Noctua.

GeLQ50Z.jpg

The cooler right out of the box. Really good looking.

ZKSUxaX.jpg

Here's the top view. Very nice.

fqFUMGv.jpg

And the second fan installed.

0mKDp1B.jpg

Got the install hardware installed. Really easy.

Nqa36ke.jpg

A bit of thermal paste.

bbptgvQ.jpg

And the cooler on. (And in the case.) Again super easy.

THAvp3h.jpg

A bit of cable management.

dFrfyCe.jpg

GPU Installed. Look at those cables.

qQLf7Nk.jpg

And everything up and running. The lights look a lot better in real life.

My R9 280 is clocked at 1150MHz with 1250MHz on the memory.

So, to wrap things up. (For now.) The performance increase was definitely worth it. Everything hardware wise went great. Though I can't say the same with software. This was my first time buying a Windows License, but I've had a lot of problems. First my GPU doesn't have a UEFI GOP BIOS, so that was a small issue. And then my HTC One M8 wasn't being detected because I bought an 'N' version of Windows, which doesn't include Media Player 12. Apparently you need to to use Android phones. That took me forever to figure out. And finally Windows 8.1 has stupid ownership policies, so to change anything I have to take ownership of it first. But overall I'm happy. This machine under load is as loud as my last machine at idle. I was able to get the 4690K to 4.5GHz with 1.140V. I could get it further, but I'm happy with it there. Temps have never gone above 55C under load, so that's fantastic. I think that's all for now. Have a goodnight guys.

One thing to add. I'm getting that annoying EMI thing again, got rid of it in my last computer, but now my solutions aren't working. I can hear screeching when I move my mouse or my GPU goes up in load. Any help would be appreciated.

I'm also in need of a name for this baby. Any suggestions?

Why did you buy the mobo now? On sale?

Most retailers accept 1:1 return or exchange within a few days of purchase, if the item is damaged or DOA.

Price dropped and got scared it would sell out. Also, scared I'd spend my money.

@EarthboundHero

Did you consider an AIO cooling solution? What ultimately swayed you towards an NH-D15?

I was looking at AIOs, but the noise seemed higher and temps were around the same, if not worse for the AIOs. I was particularly looking at the Swiftech H22/40X

Noise on an AIO? Hmm, I have a X61 Kraken and can barely hear it :) only when I crank up the RPMs of the fans, maybe then :) But then again, the H440 case is silent as f*ck :D

was just curious

some people just say no to any form of liquid in their case. NH-D15 is one of the better coolers out there.

Do you have a specific case in mind? Or are you going to reuse your current one?

Going to re-use my Enthoo Pro. I love the look of it, though it's quite heavy and loud, but I can use my HyperX Clouds to block it out as long as it's not too loud..

I also have a unboxing video however I'm not sure if it would against CoC to post it here. Can someone let me know? @WoodenMarker

That's fine as long as you don't ask for subs/likes.

lol i know what you mean

I've got 10 Scythe GT AP-15's in my HAF-X on top of the big 230mm fan in the front and 200mm fan on the side. Sounds like a box fan lol

I'm eyeing the Fractal Define R5 for my next build. And I plan on using 5 SP120 Quiet Editions, instead of the AP-15's. The AP-15's aren't that loud, but the bearings on them keep going bad. I've got a squeaky fan now that's driving me nuts.

After seeing @LinusTech 's Silent build log, it's changed my POV entirely lol
