These days criticism of NVIDIA GTX 970 graphics card memory problems is in the air. Now it has turned out that similar symptoms are experienced by the most powerful representative of the mobile series – NVIDIA GeForce GTX 980m.

NVIDIA GeForce GTX 980m mobility Maxwell flagship is also based on the GM204 graphics processor, but in this case it has been a further cut-down version. It is featuring to 12 of the 16 blocks of SMMs, which together have 1,536 CUDA cores and 96 texture units (the number of ROP units is not known to us). In addition to the on-board include 4 GB of GDDR5 memory with 256-bit.

Service GameNab posted a screenshot from the famous test (application code is publicly available here) that checks the throughput of the memory blocks. It turns out that in the model GeForce GTX 980m last 0.5 GB also have a worse transfer – can therefore suspect that GM204 fused on GTX 980m has also a unique core structure, which translates into problems with access to the last video memory controller.

Well, for now take it which a pinch of salt as no other source has not yet confirmed the report of GameNab, but this situation seems quite likely. Interestingly, according to the editors, the GeForce GTX 970 and GTX 980m are not only the NVIDIA graphics cards with the problem of memory access. It’s getting interesting…

Not that many 980M-equipped laptops have a >1080p panel, so not anywhere near as big of an issue as 970 on desktop

 

And besides, it's not even proven. They're assuming that the 980M will have these problems as it's a cut-down GM204 like the 970.

Nobody really cares about that, most people are pointing out that Nvidia wasn't honest and clear on the specs at launch. And they are not wrong.

I'd be very curious how that preforms, if that also messes up after 3.5GB then that would be rather funny.

I don't think people are understanding this correctly. Even if these cards have a memory bandwidth problem on the last 500mb of VRAM, it was basically useless any way from the beginning. To utilize that last 4 GB you have to run games at such high resolution and texture quality the actual GPU can't even keep up. So then you have to turn down the settings or resolution. Then you don't use more than 3.5gb of VRAM. I guess what I'm trying to say is that I don't like how it was kept a secret but am I going to never buy Nvidia? No. These things happen all the time. That doesn't mean the company is bad. Just my thoughts.

Basically each "Module" of 2 L2 cache segments and 2 memory controllers gets twice as much memory which is easily handled my the normal modules.

Will also get double the VRAM but the 0.5GB that is slow now becomes 1GB of VRAM that is slow

Wait no one knew this? I assumed this immediatly. I don't really know too much about the 980m ,but it also has 64 ROPs listed just like the 970. In fact, I assumed that the 980m is likely based on the 970 as many top end mobile gpus are based on their mid or mid-high range desktop counterpart, and even if it's not it's very similar.

wait, what about the 970m, i belive that we say the 970 and 980m performed rather similar. maybe this is not a bad thing, but showing that we are so close to real desktop chips in mobile sysytems

I seriously doubt they'd release an 8gb version with so much slower vram...  the 970 needed nerfing, the 980m did not. So honestly I'm a bit skeptical on this.

Developers have begun to and will continue to use RAM for extensive caching of resources to provide smootger gameplay. While I agree that it's not a game changing issue, for a mobile computer longetivity is a much bigger deal. People going out ans buying those crazy SLI 980M 8gb laptops are spending an absurd amount of money for so.ething that may have serious framebuffer issues a couple of yeara down the road.
