One plus one silk white or sandstone black and invite

Emrgca

Hey all,

My nexus 5 broke recently and I'm thinking of getting a oneplus one.

16gb is actually enough for me, but I think the invite for it is harder to get. Or am I mistaking? Else I'll try to find a sandstone black invite

Do any of you have any tips to get an invite? I'm kinda phoneless now^^

Thanks.

I see people give them away on the forum every couple of weeks :S Can you not just order them now? I thought they had finally scrapped the invite thing :S

Hm, I got to be more active then!

That's what I thought also, but na the invite thing is there. I believe it did get easier to get though, because the more people have the device, the more invites they will be able to share, hence the name 1 plus 1 :D

I don't know what would be the best place for you to look for a device.

What I do know:

- You can buy either the 16 or 64gb versions with an invite, you don't need a specific 16gb invite.

- There are retail stores that sell oneplus one's, no invite needed. They are a little bit more expensive.

- Try looking on ebay or amazon for secondhand oneplus phones, the newer the better of course. Some sell it unopened.

Tips for when buying it:

- Buy phantom glass, just do it.

- Buy a good casing (I have a Tudia. It's excellent in protecting but it does not always fit perfectly, blocking the unlock button)

- Don't go with the pre-installed cyanogen. Wait for oneplus' new OS or go for something like Mahdi-rom!

Good luck

Thanks for the advice!

Didn't know the invite is for both.

And I heard about the new os(oxygen was it?) But is that not an update? Or is it a whole new os? If so do you know when they will ship it with that?

Phantomglass..hmm, either that or their glass screenprotuctor, I'll see.

Cyanogen broke contract and now Oneplus is forced to put their OS-developement on full-throttle, expect updates on it soon. It will be introduced soon.

Phantom Glass is more specialized. Chances are Oneplus' screen protectors are just 'regular' nilkin 9H ones.

I'd go for Phantom

Yeah a lot of people love them. I loved the idea too.

Lately they've been growing big, into an international company. I read up on how they dealt with the Oneplus contract and I realized how immature the CEO is about these kind of things. He's also an asshole in most of the things he says, always randomly blaming other companies for things that they do wrong.

Another interesting thing is that Microsoft started investing in Cyanogen, I'm not sure where that's going.

I looked at all this combined and realized Cyanogen has drifted far away from the awesome community project they once were.

Mahdi is a community project, and it's damn good :)

Hmm, yeah they did a dick move on oneplus regarding their contract. I believe cyanogen made a deal with another company so that that company would be the only one to be able to sell in india, so its not allowed for opo to sell in india with cyanogen mod.

So what youa are recommending me is to wait for opo, untill they ship their phones with their own OS?

It depends. If you're willing to wait, you'll have no phone in the meantime while risking that the OS isn't good at all. Also, they must have some easy way to reach out with their OS to all of the people who already have a Oneplus, so I think you'll be fine if you buy it now.

The advantage of rooting it is that you can choose exactly what google apps you want while installing a ROM on your phone. The rom tutorials always refer to 'Gapps', Google App-Packages that you install alongside your ROM. It gives you more freedom In my opinion. Another advantage is that you will not lose warranty when rooting a Oneplus one.

Waiting for Oneplus is the secure and easy way, as there is no way to tell for me if they will be able to offer their new OS to current Cyanogen users without having to go through a hassle.

So by rooting it I'll be able to get the newer os anyway, so If I'm ok with rooting my device there is actually no reason to not buy it now?:D

I'm absolutely sure you'll be able to get it when it comes out, either through official Oneplus updates (most likely) or through websites like XDA forums.. You will get it.

If you're good with rooting go for it.

It's a great phone, but fragile. Don't forget to protect it!

Haha, I will. Thank you a ton for the advice, I'll probably get the 16gb if I can manage to get an invite:)

Agree with everything @Redpalmtree said except the need for protection. :P

Haha, I'd imagine it being fragile though. It's big yet pretty thin.

Would you wait? Or yolobuy it now.

It's pretty solid. No more fragile than any other phone out there at the moment. And I personally hate cases because they ruin the feel of the phone. Glass screen protectors are more valid, I don't use them because I suck at putting them on and despite being pretty careless with my phones, I've never damaged the screen of any, somehow. :P

Currently I'm on a CM12 nightly. That said I'm also interested in moving away from CM due to their recent behavior (the manner in which they terminated wih 1+, MS investing, trying to take android away from Google).

I'd say:

If you need the phone now - do your research, find a custom ROM you're happy with, if you have an old phone, experiment with getting a custom ROM working on there if it's not something you're familiar with. If you're happy, buy the phone and load the custom ROM (be aware you'd need to make sure there's a version of said custom ROM for the 1+1).

If you're in no rush, wait to see if there's any news on Oxygen and maybe any images to see what it'll be like.

In the oneplus one, the screen is extra fragile. The touch screen interface is embedded in the screen, so if the screen cracks, your device is broken.

Also the screen is sticking out a bit, if it falls on its face, you're done for.

A case like the Tudia, has edges that rise above the screen. So if you drop it, you won't harm the screen, the extra glass screenprotector will stop it if you do.

Screen protectors I can understand, but I can't stand cases. :P

Yeah cases aren't that awesome. It makes my device 1,5/1,7 times heavier and the sporadic button blocking is annoying too.

For me this device is for the long run so I want to make sure :)

Each to their own. Only phone I've used a case on was my Note2 and everytime I take it out of the case (e.g. to take out the sim), I always think "damn this is slimmer than I thought". :P

yeah hahaha. Sometime I take it out just to look at it..

I go like: Wow, you're so beautiful..

And then I rub the sandstone back and put on the case before it breaks :D
