Old HDD selecting

Dabombinable

I've finally decided to buy a HDD or 2 to replace the 80GB that died in my media center (rest in peace 6th WD HDD), and looking at Ebay I'm inundated with choices. What would be the better ones to buy, as I'm not adverse to using really old HDD (got an 85MB WD from 1992 and a 4xxMB Maxtor from 1994 still working like new), with all metal exteriors being preferable (like my old HHDs). These are what I've looked at so far (capacity isn't an issue-64GB USB for $28, and old is ok as it will match the rest of the build):

depends what you're planning on using it for?

if its for your own rig, get either 120gb ssd and a wd blue 1tb hdd (as a combo) a hybrid drive or just a wd blue hdd. - those items you were looking at on eBay are really old and really slow

Ah, IDE. Look for some of the older DiamondMax Plus 10's or a Barracuda ATA IV/7200.7. I would suggest a WD1200BB, but you seem to blow through WD HDDs like water.

That's what my main rig runs, but I don't want to add the complexity of a PCI SATA card to my old rig (1999 and previous), I doubt the bios will even recognize HDD on expansion cards.

Its new HDD that I blow through, after 1994 they all seemed to have a significantly reduced lifespan (over 3x the MTBF on the 85MB, which is why I'd prefer an older HDD). What I am intending is to have my old rig last another 10-15 years as a media center (only had to replace PSUs and HDD in it, and the 80GB was supposed to be the upgrade from the 4xxMB HDD). I'm aiming for the longest possible lifespan.

Hey Dabobminable,

That seems like a very interesting build. What are you using it for? What do you need the drive for? I may be able to suggest some legacy WD drives that you could look for. :)

Great to see that 23-year-old WD drive still going! I would love to see a photo of it.

I'm looking using them in a media center, though as long as the HDD can have Windows XP installed on it capacity isn't as great an issue, as I will be using USBs for large files.

This is the 23 year old HDD I was speaking off:

It was in constant use until 2008, when the 386 computer was in got retired (also from 1992-the HDD was an upgrade). This is where I get my expectations on HDD reliability from, as I had 2 WD HDD fail in 2003 well before the MTBF, another in 2006 and most recently the 2009 WD 80GB that I was going to use (every single S.M.A.R.T check fails, it failed last month hence the need for a replacement). I'm not even going with Seagate as I had the spindle shatter in the last one of their HDD I owned (160GB, HDD was in a computer on my desk).

You can check the Legacy of our website and see if any of the drives would meet your requirements and needs here: http://products.wdc.com/support/kb.ashx?id=U7xqk3

Thanks, browsing through the list, I might go for one of the newer AC models that are above 4Gb, if the old AC280 drives are anything to go by, they should still work perfectly.
