Will it make at least 5 years ?

iFishas

Hi guys. I am about to get my new gaming pc. I am wondering if this build can take at least 5 years. I am going to use it for gaming and programming. Some of the components i already have. Maybe you have better suggestion?

For gaming, no -- unless you're willing to substantially lower the settings -- and probably forgo 1080p on future titles.

And I'd also throw in an ssd into both builds if you have the budget for one: http://pcpartpicker.com/part/corsair-internal-hard-drive-cssdf120gbls

This would be much better:

CPU: Intel Core i5-4690K 3.5GHz Quad-Core Processor  ($219.95 @ SuperBiiz)
Motherboard: MSI Z97 PC MATE ATX LGA1150 Motherboard  ($89.99 @ Newegg)
Video Card: Gigabyte Radeon R9 290X 4GB WINDFORCE Video Card  ($299.99 @ Newegg)
Case: NZXT Source 210 (Black) ATX Mid Tower Case  ($29.99 @ Micro Center)
Power Supply: EVGA 600B 600W 80+ Bronze Certified ATX Power Supply  ($47.99 @ NCIX US)
Total: $833.87
Prices include shipping, taxes, and discounts when available

Or a more budget oriented build:

CPU: Intel Core i5-4440 3.1GHz Quad-Core Processor  ($174.99 @ NCIX US)
Motherboard: MSI H81M-P33 Micro ATX LGA1150 Motherboard  ($44.88 @ OutletPC)
Video Card: Gigabyte Radeon R9 290X 4GB WINDFORCE Video Card  ($299.99 @ Newegg)
Case: NZXT Source 210 (Black) ATX Mid Tower Case  ($29.99 @ Micro Center)
Power Supply: EVGA 600B 600W 80+ Bronze Certified ATX Power Supply  ($47.99 @ NCIX US)
Total: $707.13

The GPU is a bit weak for gaming considering how long you want it to last. For that length of time you want to buy a top teir card.

The best way to go is to upgrade your components every 2-3 years when money allows.

I'd like to note that you're putting an mATX board into an ATX case. Which is fine, but you could either get a smaller case or a bigger motherboard if you'd like.

As for how long it will last; For programming? It should be fine, but that's subjective on what you're programming. If you're doing any serious, big projects with programming, the 4590 will likely hitch quite a bit.

For gaming? Depends on your standards. I'd imagine with a 270x you could run games on ~medium with low/no AA at 1080p for a few years, but 5 years is a bit too hopeful in my eyes.

I really wish that we'd just make organic hardware already, that grows and adapts to the demands it needs to meet. That way, grannies' computers can be floppy sacks of organicness and the 12 year old Minecrafters will look like the guys that only do bicep curls, and the nerdy programmers will finally have justice, with their body-builder rigs that skipped leg day.

Well, how much would this cost at your local store?

  • i5-4440
  • Some Asus, MSI, Gigabyte, or AsRock H81/B85 board
  • A single 8gb stick of ram (any speed, DDR3, from Avexir, Corsair, Crucial, G. Skill, Adata)
  • Gigabyte, Sapphire, XFX, Power Color, MSI R9 290 or R9 290x
  • Some case: NZXT Source 210, Corsair 100R, 200R, 300R, 230T, Cooler Master HAF912, N200, N400 (or a whole bunch of others...those are just the cheaper ones I can think of off the top of my head).

Well, you aren't in the USA... but looking at parts still helps.  Save up for a K-Series, when you need to, you can overclock.  GPU, it all depends on the prices for your area.

Probably to upgrade.  Z97 boards are dual channel, so having 4 sticks of 4 is not better than 2 stick of 8.

How about an R9 280x? (or a GTX970 -- on the off chance that Nvidia is cheaper than AMD where you live)

Probably to upgrade.  Z97 boards are dual channel, so having 4 sticks of 4 is not better than 2 stick of 8.

Because I'm suggesting going with an H81 board (which only has two RAM slots). So if you go with two 4gb sticks, then if you need more ram you'll need to buy two new 8gb sticks. Alternatively, by going with a single 8gb stick you can just buy a second 8gb stick if you need more RAM.

And since dual channel vs. single channel is irrelevant when it comes to gaming, there is no downside.

Is that the cheapest LGA1150 motherboard?

Also, how much is:

The 4460 compared to the 4440?

The R9 280 vs. 280x?

And a single 8gb stick vs. two 4gb sticks?

Difference between 4440 and 4460 is about 1-2 euros. I am looking MOBO which have more usb 3.0 ports. Cheapest is

ASROCK B85 Anniversary LGA1150 Intel B85

What do you need so many usb 3.0 ports for? Most modern boards (even low-end ones) have at least two usb3.

How much cheaper is that Asrock B85 board, and whats the cost difference between 280/280x? and one 8gb stick vs. two 4gb sticks?

Well, then I'd go for the cheaper board and the R9 280x.

/Go for the i5-4440 if you go with a b85 board, and 4460 for the h97 board.

I say Yes, it will last 5 years... with some upgrades.

Take 1x8GB instead of 2x4GB to leave room for future upgrades... upgradability is more important than the tiny performance boost you will get from dual-channel in this case.

And upgrade the GPU after 2 or 3 years. A board with pcie 3.0 would be a plus if you can get one at a reasonable price, maybe future GPUs will benefit from it.

The rest should be fine (unless some crazy big changes in the PC world happen all of a sudden). As for the CPU, both Nvidia and AMD promised us less CPU usage, so if they keep their promise you should be all set.
