Nvidia responds to GTX 970 3.5GB Memory Issue

Source 1: linustechtips.com OP: TheBoneyKing

Source 2: pcper.com

  • “The GeForce GTX 970 is equipped with 4GB of dedicated graphics memory.  However the 970 has a different configuration of SMs than the 980, and fewer crossbar resources to the memory system. To optimally manage memory traffic in this configuration, we segment graphics memory into a 3.5GB section and a 0.5GB section.  The GPU has higher priority access to the 3.5GB section.  When a game needs less than 3.5GB of video memory per draw command then it will only access the first partition, and 3rd party applications that measure memory usage will report 3.5GB of memory in use on GTX 970, but may report more for GTX 980 if there is more memory used by other commands.  When a game requires more than 3.5GB of memory then we use both segments.”

  • severing of a single SM to make the GTX 970 different than the GTX 980 was the root cause of the issue

  • not clear if it’s something that has been seen before with NVIDIA GPUs that are cut down in the same way

  • speculation that this is why we don’t have the 960Ti yet

  • 960Ti would be a GM204 with more SMs disconnected (if past patterns are followed)

  • some speculation that Gigabyte’s newest BIOs fixes the memory allocation issue (or at least helps it) though that DOES NOT mean that Gigabyte 970 owners should go flashing their BIOS

  • begs the question - does the average gamer really need to utilize that last 0.5 GB efficiently when 1080P is still the standard?

Nvidia misrepresented the specs of the GTX 970

Source 1: linustechtips.com OP: CarlosRex

Source 2: anandtech.com Correcting the specs & exploring memory allocation

  • ROPs were originally incorrectly reported by Nvidia

  • 8 less ROPs than reported in the reviewer’s guide (56 compared to 64)

  • 1792 KB of L2 cache compared to their original report of 2048 KB

  • 8 less ROPs than GTX 980, 256 KB less of L2 cache

  • ROPs are not a limiting factor for GTX 970, so this is more of an annoyance than anything else

  • miscommunication between the technical team and the PR/marketing team about differences between GTX 970 and 980

  • FCC Commissioner Jessica Rosenworcel stated that the broadband threshold “frankly, should be 100 Mbps”

  • this doesn’t necessarily spell an immediate change for the penny pinching ISPs

  • simply reclassifies what they can legally call “broadband”

  • not as big of a deal as most people are making it out to be

  • they’re not saying PC and console will look the same, just that they will be based on the same starting point

Linus, those motherboards running 16x, 4x non-SLI certified lane distribution have the second slot running 4x PCI-E 2.0, not 3.0.

If you try to SLI and run something like 120hz, the bandwidth becomes a bottleneck.

Man, I really can't stand NVidia at the moment - they are just as deceptive and exploitative as they can get away with or think they can. They are by far the worst Hardware company when it comes to that. What's really baffling for me is that they don't really have the need to do that. Usually their products stand well enough on their own without having the actual need to conceil things or lock customers into their ecosystem with gameworks or G-Sync which I suspect is just a fancy 200$ framebuffer (maybe just a LITTLE bit overexpensive)! This stuff just makes customers weary, suspicious and angry and without it they'd propably be much more likely to blow AMD out of the water than with what they're doing now. Just senseless corporate bullshit!

Im pretty disappointed in the people during the show calling LTT a shill show sponsored by Nvidia and how LTT must be fanboys because they didn't get outraged over the situation.

No.

How @Slick and @LinusTech reacted was how adults should act. Weigh the entire situation, understand what could (or could not) have happened, and present their position as calmly as possible. Getting outraged and angry doesn't solve anything, contrary to how you might feel in the process of being angry.

I said before, you can be pissed off that Nvidia wasn't honest on the marketing and at all levels let this release without correcting it before launch (or shortly after). BUT, you can also still be satisfied that the 970 is a strong performing card that still can be recommended for purchase. You can reconcile those two viewpoints at once instead of being one side or the other.

I couldn't watch the entire stream live but the parts I did see on the Twitch chat were embarrassing. The mob mentality and 'outrage culture' were strong. Seems as if you simply can't even admit you don't care about the 970 situation without being labelled a fanboy shill.

Same here. It's just ridiculous how people are outraged about something they usually didn't even notice themselves.

@LinusTech Slight, correction from when you did your Dell XPS 13 (2015) unboxing after the main show. The dell is actually 2mm thinner than the Macbook Air 13" at its thickest point. 15mm compared to 17mm I believe.

I think that even if Nvidia realized the mistake before the release the cost of backpedaling when the hype train is rolling would be much larger then dealing with the small percentage of people that will deal with getting a rebate and or potential lost customers.  That's my two cents.

Why is this Mobile G-SYNC a thing?  They already addressed the issue of why laptop displays might not need the module over a year ago when they responed to AMD's freesync demo that was running on laptop displays:

"However, Petersen quickly pointed out an important detail about AMD's "free sync" demo: it was conducted on laptop systems. Laptops, he explained, have a different display architecture than desktops, with a more direct interface between the GPU and the LCD panel, generally based on standards like LVDS or eDP (embedded DisplayPort). Desktop monitors use other interfaces, like HDMI and DisplayPort, and typically have a scaler chip situated in the path between the GPU and the panel. As a result, a feature like variable refresh is nearly impossible to implement on a desktop monitor as things now stand.

That, Petersen explained, is why Nvidia decided to create its G-Sync module, which replaces the scaler ASIC with logic of Nvidia's own creation. To his knowledge, no scaler ASIC with variable refresh capability exists—and if it did, he said, "we would know." Nvidia's intent in building the G-Sync module was to enable this capability and thus to nudge the industry in the right direction."
