Fractal Define R5 or Corsair 450D?

PlayModeOn

Hello,

I am stuck between the two case - Fractal Define R5 and Corsair 450D.

I like the looks of both of these cases but they seem very similar too.

I am leaning towards the Define R5 because it is newer and essentially the same but has extra padding to block noise, etc.

But I want your thoughts on these two and which one should I get? It is hard to decide but if its a tie then I'd go for the Define R5 as a default choice.

But before committing I want to be sure.

Thanks!

I'd personally go for the Fractal case. Looks a bit more classy and minimal, imo.

If you want a silent build the R5 will fair much better compared to the 450D and it's large open mesh to the inside, with that it would work really well for high airflow and cooling. I've seen both and they both look awesome to me but I just love that mesh front on the Corsair in my opinion.

if you want to mount fans on the top of the R5 you will have to get rid of these noise cancellations plates

Thanks for the replies guys.

I don't really mind about silence too much because I can always lower the RPM of the fans in a cold day. And I am already using a noisy PC so I am used to it. But extra foam padding for silence never hurts.

It seem people are suggestion Define R5 so far, is there an advantage for a 450D? It seems the 450D is inferior in every way.

If I am to buy a R5 what colour should I get? White is out of stock unfortunately. Only black with black front - or - black with gray front.

450d has more height in the top for rads it appears

Yes but I am only planning to have 280 rad with 30mm thickness and in push config.

Corsair's new H110i GT I planned to get.

no open loop? come on man

lol

I don't like maintenance :)

And the waterblock/pump on that H110i GT is so sexy.

Any 280 radiator thicker than 30mm won't fit inside the R5 with fans as push exhaust.

Unless you place the rad in the front but I prefer on top.

The R5 is a more outstanding case in terms of features and performance.

Any color you want really. I always like my case black because thats the least attention grabbing color. Or you can pick for better match with your table/wall color and stuff.

Pretty obvious the R5 was made more to be a workhorse than to be looked at.

Do you think black and gray looks fine and not very distracting? I like the two-tone finish but all-black is fine with me as well.

I find the grey panel to be distracting. It looks almost out of place. When looking its hard to not notice its just a featureless slab of grey.

But if it was a mirror surface instead, I'd dig it.

Ah ok. Thanks for your input.

I'm going to stick with the gray version since my favourite colour combination is blue and gray and somehow Fractal knew that so they released a case with gray front and blue LED just for me

Excellent hehe.

So yea I will be picking up the R5 over the 450D.

But is there other cases within the R5's price range that is also just as good?

H440 I would pick but it doesn't have as much intake mount as much as exhaust so it's airflow would be in negative pressure which I do not like.

450D...I like Fractal, Josh is awesome.. but I despise doors on cases

What's wrong with the door?

99% of the time they break within the first year of use..

Um how? Unless you still use CD drives or using the fan controller a lot (though it should be set on auto) then there is no reason why you need to open up the doors apart from cleaning the dust filters.

Here's Linus's review on the case if you're interested

Yup I watched Linus, Dimitry (HardwareCanucks), Logan, Paul and Kyle's review on this case 5 times each. I cannot wait to pick it up on Monday!

Can anyone also recommend me a 1000W 170mm PSU that goes well along this case? I want to have two 140mm fans on the bottom so I can have positive pressure, the PSU might be blocking the fans.

The 450D really looks better, but I'd go with the R5.

It's not like you're gonna stare at your build every day after you build it. Good for show-off though.

The R5 has a better review by Linus too.

You can bark like a dog, but that won't make you a dog.

You can act like someone you're not, but that won't change who you are.

Finished Crysis without a discrete GPU,15 FPS average, and a lot of heart

How I plan my builds -

Spoiler

For me I start with the "There's no way I'm not gonna spend $1,000 on a system."

Followed by the "Wow I need to buy the OS for a $100!?"

Then "Let's start with the 'best budget GPU' and 'best budget CPU' that actually fits what I think is my budget."

Realizing my budget is a lot less, I work my way to "I think these new games will run on a cheap ass CPU."

Then end with "The new parts launching next year is probably gonna be better and faster for the same price so I'll just buy next year."

R5 is good, but I don't like what they did to it, compare to R4.

If you're not going water cooling, go R4, if yes - R5 is better.

I thought the R5 is considered the better looking case. But the 450D still looks good, I just wish they fix the 5.25 bay covers because when you remove them then it looks ugly.

Why, what's wrong with it?

Logos are everywhere, top panel is a 'modular' plastic sh*t.

Also it's not so rigid, as R4.

This is only my opinion, u may choose what u like.

Get R5. A 450D can't even fit dual tower heat sinks, not worthy of the obsidian title

Remember a wise man once said, "You'll most likely hear/see more bad reviews from products than good, because if they get a good product, they won't bother to write a review, and if they got a bad product, they'll complain about the product" ~ SoftenButterCream

Between the two I would pick Fractal...or Nanoxia with Noctua

i7-3770K @ 4.5GHz, ASRock Z77 Extreme4, G.Skill Sniper 8GB DDR3 1866 @ CL9, ASUS GTX 780, CM HAF XM, Samsung 850 Pro 256GB, WD Black 1TB x 2, EVGA SuperNOVA G2 850W, BenQ XL2420TE 24" 144Hz @ 1080p, CM Nepton 280L, Noctua Industrial IP67 2000RPM 140mm PWM Fan x 6

Sup man, i am very happy with my r5, same sound when gaming as it being idle. EXTREMELY quite. it looks nice too. plenty of  space for cable management and extra fans.
