Welp, it's done it. My 200GB Maxtor hard drive has done it.

terrytek

@Syntaxvgm, remember our little discussion about Maxtor drives and how not many exist? Well, there's one less existing in the world. My 200GB Maxtor SATA hard drive has passed away. The little bugger has been on 24/7 for 2 years and now it has bit the dust. One day, I kept hearing clicking that comes on for a second, then goes away, then a few minutes later, it comes back. Then I realize Windows doesn't find the drive either. I reboot the computer, only to find out the BIOS doesn't find either. Then I know for sure it is dead. I know its not working because both the data and the power cables are plugged in. It still spins, it just can't be identified. I really don't have much of a purpose for it. I had Windows 8.1 on it, but I moved it to my 2TB hard drive, along with other data on there, then it got formatted. It then got Windows Technical Preview, but now that the hard drive isn't working, it's gone.

You have served my purpose, and that is to keep my data

But you are more than a hard drive, you are family.

TL;DR: Hard drive died, was a sober moment, and i miss it.

And to think that I've got a Maxtor IDE HDD from 1994 that's been in use every single day. Then again unlike newer HDDs it is a steel brick, with only the IDE and Molex connectors being plastic.

At least it died a hard worker. It's been on 24/7/365 for 2 years.

But the drive still runs. I'm keeping it in my system until it really can't spin anymore.

Left it in the closet. But since Maxtor no longer exists, idk if warranty still works, i mean, 7 years.

nope, just super bad luck with WD drives.

Will they honor a Maxtor drive? They did buy them out, but not sure if they honor warranty on a Maxtor drive. And besides, i'm pretty sure it's past warranty period.

usually they do. i know when i think samsung bought OCZs SSDs they honored OCZs warranties. even if it's past warranty you should still give it a shot. they would rather spend the ~$20 it would take to send you a new drive and have you as a happy customer more likely to buy in the future than the opposite. i once had a super bitchy barrister at a starbucks and I emailed them about it, they sent me a $20 giftcard xD
