290x lightning because it's cheaper & faster at 1440p.

I had a 290x Lightning & G1 970, compared them first hand and the 290x was faster by a slight bit in 90% of the games I tested & synthetic benchmarks it won as well.

I wanted a second card so I bought a 970 g1 first to compare vs it, but it made more since to buy a second 970 g1 vs a second 290x lightning.  My mobo doesn't have good spacing for triple slot cards, so they would of been sandwhiched together until I had cash to watercool them.

I'd say wait. Not only are some really good 1440p monitors about to be released, but there's also new AMD cards coming out.

That's 1 point for the 290X

I already have a 1440p monitor mate :P My only problem with waiting is that my 670 really struggles with 90% of the games.

Care to elaborate?

He likes to go around and regurgitate that someone had problems with her/his lightnings and that's apparently a giant reason to not buy them despite thousands of units being perfectly fine.

when Octavialicious see's this (assuming he does), he'll tell you.  I don't know the whole story, but I heard it was quite bad :/

Well going by that logic , nobody should buy GPUs ...ever again...  just because one GPU was problematic.

No it's really not that bad, some cards have issues with the LN2 bios sometimes, and the LED has issues on some cards.   The LN2 bios is an easy fix, as you can just get another one from MSI or download one on the 290x Lightning thread.

The Ln2 bios isn't really useful anyways, as the normal BIOS is PLENTY for the air cooler when overclocking. (Keep in mind the chances of getting a card like this is quite slim, but it can happen to ANY GPU.)

It's nothing that affects the usability of the card, I've talked to Octavialicious in status updates a few times about the Lightning, and for the price it can be bought for, it's still an absolute beast.  He/she agreed with me.

I believe it was more of an issue w/customer support

So the 290x seems like the optimal choice? I can still sell my 670 to reduce the cost , heck , when the 3xx come out i may sell the 290x and get one of those. What do you guys think?

IMO yes, it's a great card with crazy overclocking headroom.

Thousands of companies have terrible customer support, that's not really an excuse to completely boycott a great product.  Yes it's f'd up, but if the card is a great card for a better price, it's a better option IMO.

It's OP's decision; its not that its a bad card but rather that I wouldn't buy it myself

Personally I would recommend an R9 290x TOXIC

A brand new toxic costs 400+ over here . that's why i thought it's such a good deal.

Either way you wont loose OP, the 290X will run 1440p and if you wait more powerful cards for the same price and/or the 290X drops in price I run 2 R9 280X's in crossfire on a 1440p monitor and it runs every game over 60 fps, surely a 290X is close to matching the performance of 2 R9 280X's?

With the recent price drop I'd go with the 290x. At least you'll be getting a full 4GB's of VRAM unlike the 970 lol.
