4790k 1.28v?

Hey guys,

 

I was wondering I just put in my asus maximus vi board with a 4790k and at stock clock, stock cooler its auto set to 1.28v.  I haven't used Intel processors in a long time so im not really sure whats a good voltage for them.  What do you guys think?

Well first you look at your load temps, then you determine if they are too high, then if they are you turn down the voltage.

With the stock 4790k cooler you should leave everything at default, because the cooler is not sufficient to keep it from overheating when overclocked.

To be honest Im scared to run aida64 because the stock cooler is so horrible.  Im only playing games and running a surround setup.  I will be getting a new cooler soon ( a noctua single tower heatsink because I haven't had any luck with liquid coolers)

If the temps worry you then take the volts down a bit. CPUs auto voltages are higher than what is needed to guarantee stability. Somewhere around 1.05-1.1 is where I'd expect to see it based on other samples, though it isn't guaranteed.

If you're not happy with it feel free to lower the vcore. the chip won't need 1.28v for 4.5Ghz boost unless you have a not so good chip which is fairly unlikely. You probably need like 1.15v for 4.5Ghz.

 

Just run the stress test anyways to check how the temps are, even if it overheats it's cool you can just turn the stress test off. The only time I'd worry is when you're pumping a lot of volts into it and even then it won't die in a 1 hour stress test (well maybe if you put like 2v+ into the cpu xD).
