Laptop SSD upgrade

El Bejelando

Hey guys :)

It's about time I upgraded my HP Probook with a new SSD. Right now I have a 320gb 5400rpm hard drive.

I'm leaning towards the 850 EVO, but are there any other SSD's i should check out before ordering? I'm thinking 120gb is enough for school work.

BTW: it has to be 7mm or thinner, and I live in Norway, so I'm ordering off www.dustinhome.no

[CPU: 4670k] [CPU Cooler: Antec Kühler 1220] [Case: Obsidian 350D] [Mobo: Maximus VI Gene] [RAM: Vengeance Pro 8GB] [GPU: 770 DirectCU II] [PSU: CX750M

[Storage: Samsung 840 Evo 120GB + Seagate Barracuda 2TB] [Screen: Dell U2312HM 23" E-IPS] [Keyboard: Steelseries Apex RAW]

Hey El Bejelando,

Depends on how much space you'll need for you school work, 120GB could not be enough. I'd advise you to leave around 30GB for your OS and, since SSDs need 12%-15% free space for caching for optimal performance, that would be another 18GB and you will be left with about 72GB of usable space. You could get an external drive to store your larger data or simply go with a larger SSD. Depends on how much space will your school work take up. :)

Another option that I could suggest checking out is WD Black2. It's a dual drive that combines 120GB SSD with 1TB HDD all in one 2.5" form factor. You can operate with it as if you have two separate drives, having 120GB for your OS and more demanding applications and 1TB for all your other data. Here's a link if you decide to check it out: http://products.wdc.com/support/kb.ashx?id=XEWVsf:)

I would say the only ssd to look at would be the crucial mx200. But maybe the crucial is a little better because of its mlc nand compared to samsungs tlc nand they use. But then again their nand is stacked so a very tough decision that even i am going through right now.
