Noctua i5 4690k OC cooling help?

Go to solution Solved by WoodenMarker,

Okay thanks and how much better would a NH-D15 be?

Look at what I linked.

I want a Noctua CPU cooler for 4Ghz OC on an i5 4690k but I'm getting a very pretty saber motherboard and don't want to cover the entire thing in a giant NH 15 or 14 so will my temps still be safe at 4Ghz and maybe a bit higher if I go for one of their 92mm fan stacks instead of 120mm or 140mm?

The stock cooler would probably already be enough for a 4ghz oc not to mention an aftermarket 92mm tower heatsink.

I'd suggest taking a look at the NH-u12s/u14s and pushing for higher oc's if you want a slim cpu cooler.

What kind of OC's do you think could be run with one of those?

Probably 4.4ghz+

The only good reason to get sub-120mm cooler is height restriction on case side. Or that for some reason you want brand (like Noctua) but don't have money for larger coolers. Trust me, even 92mm Noctua makes more noise than 120mm case fans.

I wanted to get the NH-D9L because I have a nice looking mother board and don't want to cover it up with a huge heatsink. If you don't care about looks that's fine but I do. The NH-D9L has two heatsinks with a 92mm fan in the middle and I would add another on the side. So how much difference  would there be in temps and sound between a NH-D9L with an extra fan compared to something like a 140mm like the NH-D14/15 and how much better over clocks could I get?

A NH-D14/15 would perform much better than a NH-D9L. The D9L doesn't even hold a candle to the u12s: http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/showthread.php?289967-Noctua-NH-D9L

The u12s would also cover up less of the motherboard than the D9L.
