Need some help connecting 2 pc's via crossover cable.

vong

Hi, I need some help with setting up to pc's using a crossover cable. I've plugged the cable into both pc's but they don't seem to detect each other. The cable's colours are different on each end so I know it's the correct cable. I used this guide http://www.wikihow.com/Connect-Two-Computers-Together-with-an-Ethernet-Cable and I'm stuck at step 6. Can someone help me please.

Main PC CPU: 7700K, MOBO: Asus Strix, GPU: Aorus Extreme 3080, PSU: EVGA Supernova G2 750, RAM: Corsair Vengeance 16GB Storage: 970 Evo 1tb

Lounge PC CPU: 4790K MOBO: Asus Hero VII GPU: EVGA 3060 Ti PSU: Corsair RM650 RAM: Kingston HyperX 16gb Storage: 970 Evo 1TB

Just go into windows and type network and sharing center, or right click your network icon on the bottom right and select the network and sharing, I've personally never used a cross over cable so I don't know very much on this.

Ok, to get to step 7 go to the left side bar and there should be a "change advanced sharing settings" you shoudl find that stuff there, afterwards you should be able to click on the greyed out network back on the network and sharing center

Okay, figured how to get to step 8. Silly me, I wasn't using the home network. Just stuck on step 8 now. When I click onto the other pc it asks me for a password, I don't have a password for the other pc though...

I believe windows uses a default like Admin or Administrator, you may need to look into that for the version of windows your using.

Tried both of them and they don't work, both are using windows 7 by the way. I made it so that I didn't need a password to connect both pc's in the advanced settings.

I think i may have a solution go back into the advanced sharing settings on the left side of networks and scroll down make sure the password protect sharing is clicked to off, that may do the trick.

when you are asked for a user/password you need to use a login from the computer you are connecting to.

Yeah, that's what I meant. Still asks for a password.

Neither pc's have a password for their accounts.

so you didn't even set a password for the first account created or default admin? have you tried creating / using the home group password or joining the same work group?

or try this: control panel -> Administrative tools -> local security policy -> local policies -> security options -> acounts: limit local account use of blank passwords to console login only and change that to disable
