would a sli gtx 970 beat a single gtx 980

so im wanting to know if i would sli a gtx 970 would it preform better on games like bf4, arma 3(cpu limited i know),far cry3,skyrim with a bunch of mods,

i would probably sli the gtx 980 in the late future but just kind of wondering. and ive read alot about the 970 and the 3.5gb high vram and 0.5gb low vram does it cause alot of stuttering and unstable fps? thanks in advance btw i would be running at 1080 but will get a 4k moniter once i get money enough

Running The Crew with 1440p DSR on a 1080p monitor caused a shit-ton of stuttering. On the otherhand, my old 980 ran smooth as butter. I think you can guess my choice.

Two 970's will beat a single 980, but if you're wanting to do 4k later on I would fork out the money for a 980 now and get another one when you invest in a 4k monitor since it will perform a crap ton better than two 970's.

Yes, 2 970s will perform better than a single 980. Unless a particular game doesn't support sli (obviously).

if you going 4k than I'd say 980. if you aint than defs SLI 970's. Thats what I'm going for, buying one now than another much later on. and the nice part is even with them in SLI the power calculators I've used says peak on both will be +-500watts so my nice RM550 will happily handle SLI when I put the second one in.

A single GTX 970 is only ~15% slower than a single GTX 980, so two are of course much faster.

 

The VRAM is only going to be an issue with games actively using between 3.5 GB and 4 GB of VRAM, and even at 4K not all of them would. That said, for 4K I'd rather recommend Crossfire R9 290X's. They seem to slightly outpace GTX 970's at higher resolutions anyway, regardless of how much VRAM is in use.
