Schiit Modi as Standalone DAC?

I don't understand the question...  The Modi IS a DAC with RCA output.  If your question is if it's a good DAC, then yes, it's a very good one. 

Question is if the Modi can be used as a standalone DAC without an amp

The answer is no. You'll probably will hear sound, but it won't be pleasing. You need an amp with every DAC.

No standalone DAC should be used without an amp.
