Laptop Speed much faster than Desktop Speed

Hello!

We recently got some better internet in our house. We used to have a download speed of about 10 and upload of 0.3mb/s and also very unstable.

Now we have upgraded and the upload speed has gone up to 6 mb/s everywhere in the house!

The download speed, however, has increased massively to around 30 mb/s on every device in the house except for our only stationary desktop which is mine. On this PC I now only get around 2-3 mb down, but still 6 mb up. It shouldnt be an issue of a bad PC, it has very good components. It may, however be due to the fact that I'm using a D-LINK Powerline AV 500 to get the internet straight to my PC, whilst the rest of the devices goes wireless connection.

Powerline network speeds vary based on how old and how good the wiring is in your house. Although ping and consistency of latency is always better with powerline, with old or poor house wiring, it's not a surprise to get higher throughput over wireless.

Actually an easier way to test without spending money is turn off WiFi on the laptop and hook the laptop using the powerline adapters to see if the same slow speeds occur.

Im very noob when it comes to theses things, but how do I easily connect wirelessly instead? I think I need something to do that or am I wrong?

Stick the WIFI USB adapter into a USB port, and setup the software. If you don't have WIFI capabilities on your motherboard, buy it.

There are a few possible things that I can think may be causing this.
 

To test and troubleshoot I recommend the following:

1. Unplug your desktop from the powerline adapater
2. Plug the laptop into the powerline adapter that you just unplugged the desktop from and turn off WiFi
3. Run speedtest on laptop

If speedtest gives same numbers as before, your problem likely lies with NIC on your desktop or it's drivers.

1. Plug the desktop back into the powerline adapter
2. Update desktop LAN drivers
3. Run speedtest and see if it made a difference
4. If still slow, your NIC may be dying

 

If speedtest now gives slow numbers on the laptop the problem is somewhere with the powerline networking.

1. Make sure the ethernet cords on both sides of the powerline adapter are good, a cable with a broken strand will drastically reduce throughput.
2. If the cables seem to be fine then you either got a bad powerline kit or your houses wiring just isn't compatible with it.
