Need help choosing a USB Stick

Newyuni

Hello,

I would like to try to use an OS like Ubuntu on a USB Stick/ Flash Drive

Due to the fact that my laptop only has USB 2.0 Ports and no USB 3.0 ports I was wondering if I would run into any problems trying to do use the OS on a flash drive considering the speed of the OS.

How fast does a USB Stick have to be for me to be able to use it for it ?

Is a USB 3.0 divice compatible with a USB 2.0 USB Stick ?

Thank you

I honestly don't even know if its possible to run an OS from a flash drive, but the speed is probably irrelevant since a 5400 rpm HDD is probably way slower than a flash drive.

When I have a linux distro on my usb ( 64gig 2.0 kingston) it runs smoothly. I've never come into any sort of issues.

USB 3.0 will work in a 2.0 port since it's backwards compatible.

the cheapest USB 2.0 one you can find will do fine! Linux can run off a live cd so anything reads and writes quicker than that!

Ok and how much space do I actually need on the USB Stick  ? I got one here that has 1,8 GB on it. But mostly I´ve come across instructions that suggest a minimum space of at least 2 GB

If I buy a 16 GB Stick  will that be way to much for it ?

Hey Newyuni,

You shouldn't have any problems running a portable OS from your flash drive. both USB2.0 and USB3.0 are fast enough to do that. Also, they are backward and forward compatible which means you can use a USB3.0 flash drive on a USB2.0 port and a USB2.0 flash drive on a USB3.0.

I needed to change drives on my laptop a while ago and I was running a OS from my external HDD which is a 5,400 rpm and works slower than a flash drive, but the OS still managed to run smoothly.

I just ran Ubunto from CD and it was kind of slow BUT still manageable. The noise from the DVD Drive is something I didn´t notice before.
Going to buy a USB with at least 16 GB should be more than enough.

Got a question for portable OS´s. As far as I know anything you safe during the portable OS is running will be gone as soon as I restart the computer, right ?

Is it possible to access your normal hard drive during the portable OS is running. I tried and was asked to enter a password even though I had not set a password for windows.

I know it has little to do with the topic.I am sorry
