Best CPU for my application?

When it comes to which CPU specs to look for in certain applications, I'm not really sure where i should start. My Primary use for the PC I'm planning on building is >80% gaming with which i would like to be in 4k. The rest will be a mix of streaming, video editing, web browsing, and school/business uses. The CPU I'm currently leaning towards is the i7 4790k. From reviews I have seen, speed should not be a problem with this choice: however, is a quad core sufficient enough for my intended application? To an extent, i don't really have a budget although I'm not willing to pay much more than 500$ on a CPU. With exception to the case, cooling, monitor, and the fact that i really wanted the GTX970 until the recent issue, my build is stalled and limited by which CPU I end up choosing. Any and all knowledge is greatly appreciated, for I am still fairly new to this community. Thank you in advance for any helpful posts.

i7-4790K is the perfect all around CPU if you can afford it i highly recommend you go with it, it's plenty for the tasks you've listed and should suffice for at least 3 to 4 years i think.

Now if i through possibly a 2-way SLI in mix does that change anything as far as my choice?

I'd really only go for an X99-based build with an i7 5820K if you were doing professional video editing for a job or something. The i7 4790K should most definitely suffice. As for the GPU, if you are really worried about the GTX 970 memory issue, you could always wait and see what AMD's R300 series GPU linup in the Q2 of this year will bring.

ON A 7 MONTH BREAK FROM THESE LTT FORUMS. WILL BE BACK ON NOVEMBER 5th.

no, just make sure you get a motherboard that supports SLI, here is the list of motherboard that would get this job done:

http://pcpartpicker.com/parts/motherboard/#c=99&l=2&sort=a8

my recommendation today goes to the ASUS Z97-E...it's cheapest right now and good quality board backed with very nice software suite, cant go wrong if you can deal with the goldish accents and brownish PCB (it's certainly not the prettiest)...are you looking for a color scheme in particular?

WOW this deal would be hard to pass on...i usualy don't recommend gigabyte's motherboards but this one is very nice for the price:

My case is going to be white. Blue would be a nice secondary for an "ice" theme

this one for black and blue color is cheap and has the features you need:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813157506&nm_mc=AFC-C8Junction&cm_mmc=AFC-C8Junction-_-na-_-na-_-na&cm_sp=&AID=10446076&PID=3938566&SID=

If red and black would do, this one has an incredible deal right now...i usualy don't recommend gigabyte's motherboards but this one is very nice for the price:

this is what i consider a ''superior'' motherboard and it won,t cost more...i'd go with that.

Also as far as motherboards go, maybe I'm getting to picky but I would like to eventually run sli/crossfire and wanted dual 16 pin pci slot capability

yes, all the boards i linked so far will fully support SLI/CFX

The gigabyte G1 board for 124.99$ is a beast...this is a much higher end board it shouldnt be priced that low.
