Sata 2 and Sata 3 compatible?

The Dragon

Are sata 2 and sata 3 compatible? Say I'm connecting a sata 3 cable into my sata 3 connector on my motherboard then connecting the other end to a sata 2 device, would that work?

Does that mean I can plug my PCIE SATA drive in a USB port?

Does that mean I can plug my PCIE SATA drive in a USB port?

only if it has an IDE power cable

Do sata 2 cables still exist?

they are exactly the same as SATA1 and SATA3 except that with SATA2 they were revised to have an (optional) locking mechanism

Hey The Dragon,

All SATA devices and connectors are backwards and forwards compatible. You should have no problem using SATA 2 device on a SATA 3 port. The only concern would be the speed as it would be as fast as the slower link (in your case, the SATA2 speed of the drive).
I have an older laptop with SATA2 port and I have no problem using my SATA3 WD Black2 in it. :)
