Pc useless without internet?

Viking Kong

When my parent takes away the internet for skipping school I play some offline games and program.

I've got a few programming books too so it's all good. My main PC is currently being built and I've had to use my surface pro 2 for

about two months. I'll have it done in two more weeks hopefully. (Shipping and gaining money takes a while)

I wouldn't say a PC is useless without internet, but not having internet is very inconvenient. Without internet I would just play games, music, or watch movies or shows. Not having access to internet IS a huge part of why I prefer physical media over digital, if I don't have internet I can't download a game or watch Netflix, physical media for life yo. Although the digital games i do have on steam are usually installed on my hard drive so I can play them whenever.

My internet goes out sometimes when my parents don't pay the bill, and when that happens I tether to my phone which has LTE. Its my backup internet and good enough to watch 1080p videos or web surfing.

See with my carrier they want 5$ a day to make your phone a wifi hotspot, and only 250mb of use before it stops working. Said fuck it, did it, got through 35minutes of the WAN show at 240p (shoulda used 144p). Fucking hate touch typing...mechanical keyboard sitting five feet away...grr

Since Time Warner Cable's internet goes off more than a mentally unstable person I tend to have a computer without internet a lot of the time. I really hate it because I can't access my music (Spotify) or work, but I still use my beloved PC to write and do work. Thank God I have at least 40GB of music to listen to in such an occasion. If I didn't have music in my life I'm pretty sure I would die of boredom and lack of inspiration and food for the soul. That may sound melodramatic, but music is really important to me. -_-

I've just moved from a house to a flat around the corner and I had to wait 2 weeks for the internet to be connected. I've never been so social in my life...

...but that's all for 2015. Don't want to make a habit of it!

I use my computer a lot when I don't have a connection. I have SAI and a drawing tablet, so I draw. Or I can code something.

I've pictured this in my head a lot (and actually I've come up with an entire light novel series' worth of plot involving it) but in this version: if I found myself in 1873 London and had all of my computer equipment with me, what would I do?

Assuming I could set up a steam engine to generate power for at least my laptop, I could use it to crunch numbers for anyone who needed numbers crunched (because the City of London was becoming the financial epicenter that it is today back then), or I could set myself up as a maths teacher. or a science teacher. Or I could go to an orphanage and adopt a kid. There's just one thing though: you'd need at least Eclipse, Excel and Python installed on your computer for your laptop to be worth a damn at all, and then you'd need to be a coding god in every language for the laptop to be actually worth using. otherwise, what are you going to do? wow them with the calculator utility? They had difference engines back then.

That reminds me -- I should probably install some of that stuff.

Dam man, I would be using your phone to tether.  But yeah, having terrible internet myself I have learned how to use my computer without the internet, basically got used to sp games and learning how to do things that doesn't require the net.

Without internet connection?

I play my PS1, PS2, and PSP games on emulators... I've got enough games to last me a few weeks...

If that's not enough, I also have my archive of stuff...

I'm rooted so I don't have to pay for tethering. I also have unlimited through sprint so that's why I tether. I can use 50 GB in month and sprint doesn't car nor do they throttle me. Now my ISP throttles us sometimes when we go over our data cap of 500GB ( i think its 1000GB now since we got our internet speed doubles for free). Cox isn't as bad as other isp's though IMo.

My profile pic is the game i'm currently playing. I hope i remember to change it..

It can do pretty much anything aside from streaming, downloading, online gaming, etc. If thats all you use your computer for then it would be pretty useless.

Yes I use my PC when my internet is down, I just find some ROMs I have lying around on my Hard Drive and run them on an emulator usually (mostly Lego Star Wars), play Minecraft, do some programming or just make something for my deviantart in GIMP (faissaloo.deviantart.com if you must know)

I have enough content to use offline on my computer, to last at least a couple months. (visual novels, ebooks, games, animes...)
The last time I was without internet for 2 weeks, I spent most of my free time reading a visual novel on my laptop.... and open a web browser every 5 minutes out of habit, only to be disappointed.

So i haven't had a internet connection for 2 weeks now, and maybe have used my pc 5 times since then. Our bill went up 20$ a month at the start of 2015,so 60$ for 7megabit which is absurd, so we left them and they dgaf. Looking for new isp but that's not the point. Seems to me that my gaming pc is just a large expensive paperweight atm without internet. I mean i could play some SP games offline, but what fun is that? I need to play bf4! You never realise how much you use your pc untill the internet is gone. And my new chair i got right when the 'nets went away hasn't gotten the attention it deserves

TL;DR. Do you use your pc when you do not have an internet connection? If so what for?

I know how you feel brother just got mine working

can't forget old school ;)

Ya I realized the same thing last week when our internet was down for 4 days.I was like without the internet it is kinda pointless having this PC when all I can do is offline games (mostly simulators).

You never really notice how much you use something until you dont have it anymore. B)

Almost GB internet here on the UBC campus that rarely goes down. If it does I'll return to doing the stack of work on my bed.

There were times when my internet connection was down for roughly 20 minutes or so, because I was doing wifi and I'm far away from the router. I would either just plan an offline game, update my cd catalog, or just run a virus scan/malware scan.

As a video editor and content creator, the internet is 50% of my work. So if it goes down I can have an excuse to focus on the other 50%. c:

Most of my games are single player games and I have quite a backlog installed but unplayed so that's not a big deal. I actually had my 'nets out for about a full week what actually hit me was the lack of media streaming. I couldn't watch the newest episodes of TV I was into, I couldn't watch the newest LTT videos and I couldn't listen to new music on Spotify. Even stuff like internet radio, there's a lots of stuff that I've become used to and don't even think of as "using the internet" anymore. So that's what sucked.
