Is the 8gb Sapphire 290x worth the extra money?

Hutch

Hey all, Im going to buy a card to my new build and Im not 100% sure what to get. Was going to get a 970 but not now. I want to buy a 1440p monitor or a high refresh rate 1080p. Would the extra vram be justified for the extra $100 or should i pick up a cheap used 290x and wait for the 3**x series?

970.

The 8gb wont benefit 1440p or 1080p very much, 4gb is enough.

8GB of Vram is highly unnecessary now in days for running games. I would suggest to you to go for the 4gb Vapor X R9 290x cause it will do you well for a long time.

Don't get a 970 as it's a busted card with that Vram cripple and in the end it will force you into another upgrade sooner than later.

Chill bro... If u got that much moolah to blow... Hold up and wait for AMD to release their new stuff very soon.

Unless your current set up is on the verge of breaking down or have some serious GPU issues.

No, a normal 290x will be enough, 8gb is just marketing

Or you could wait for the 390x and prepare for earth's core temperatures

Ya judging by how great of a job AMD did on the R9 290 cards I think it will be wise to wait for the new AMD cards ... unless you are a power consumption weeny LOL.

I certainly wouldn't recommend a 970 like some people have done.

LOL people are all over this card because of what have come up recently BUT the EXCELLENT results in benchmarks and games REMAINS the SAME the GTX 970 is a true performer for the price and i will defenetly keep recommending this card.

100$ not worth it...unless you plan on running two of these in CFX and not upgrade GPU's for a couple of years...games will eventualy get to the point where they will be able to use as much a 8GB of VRAM for ultra textures even at 1080p but it might take a while and by the time you'll be required to have 8GB to max out games the R9 290X will most likely be out of processing horsepower to properly push such settings at 60+ FPS...unless you have 2 cards like that in crossfire in a couple of years i would say.

It amazes me how blind people are. It's fine for 1080p play. Go up to higher resolutions and it causes problems when crossing 3.5GB, especially in SLI.

I think at this point it's more about Nvidia lying to everyone that bought the card, but Nvidia fanboys fail to realize that.

Edit: Seeing as how I have two of these cards, it's only right for me as the consumer to warn others about Nvidia's dishonesty about the card, and what problems the card has.

It's only 20 less than the 770 was @ MSRP launch. The 770 had no issues so it was a better value.

are you serious?! the GTX 770 is the same as the old GTX 680...it was an old GPU even at launch that performed SIGNIFICANTLY worse than the GTX 780 where as the GTX 970 is within 10% only of the GTX 980...the GTX 970 is actualy an amazing card price to performance wise...OMG you guys...

Had I known I was being lied to I would've bought a 980 instead.

You contribute to the reason companies get away with events like this.

Continue supporting liars, fanboy. It hurts you and every other consumer out there.

P.S. Nothing performs "AMAZINGLY well for the price" when being lied to about the product.

AGAIN look at benchmarks and tell me the GTX 980 is worth it over the 970...also i strongly believe that nvidia will come up with a solution they will probaly let go a bios update for the cards that will unlock their full potential and IMHO they will even unlock the cards fully to give users access to all SMX units making them perform on par with the 980...i sure which they can do something like that...if not then you still got the performance you paid for and then some.
