Windows 10 - No Desktop on devices that are 7inch or smaller

GoodBytes

Windows 10 auto adapts itself based on the device it is running on.
Microsoft's Joe Belfiore revealed via Twitter today that devices running Windows with a screen that is smaller than 8inch, will automatically not have a desktop, unless you upgrade a previous version of Windows already installed. In such case, you'll have a desktop.

Windows 10 without desktop, will be able to run Modern UI apps (well now called Universal Apps, as it seams) only.

On Twitter, Joe Belfiore posts:

8" & up = "desktop" w/ win32 apps. < 8" = phones, phablets, sm tablets. No dsktp.

and adds:

Folks asking about updating 7" *existing* devices to Win10 -- you keep your desktop, you get continuum. Go try it yourself now! :)

I wonder if there's a toggle to switch, unless it just installs that way and it's stuck? Don't know how all that works.

That's dumb. Even if it's small, I still would want a desktop on a WINDOWS tablet, otherwsie it's a broken experience.

I was thinking of buying a Stream 7, but if I can't get a desktop come Windows 10...

Probably. My guess is that there is a registry value that you can set. The problem is finding it. So better wait until it is known, if you plan to get a 7inch device, or plan to do a clean install of Windows 10.

If you upgrade to Windows 10, then you'll have you desktop in Windows 10. Only if you do a clean install it will disappear.

Here's the thing. Smaller than 8inch Windows device means it's a phone or a tablet that's ARM based. And you wouldn't need a desktop on those.

True. But small note, we don't know if Windows 10 will have an ARM version. Considering that Windows 10 won't come to Surface non-Pro, but instead Microsoft will make an update for them, kinda like a "Windows 8.2", which will have some features of Windows 10, it most likely means there isn't an ARM version.

Given that it's a software thing I am sure there will be a way around it if necessary (3rd party app or reg edit).  I can't see it having that much effect though.  I think the cases you'd need a desktop on that size device would be rare.

Where there is a will, someone will get desktop mode working on small devices. Those that don't, won't. Not seeing this as a big issue IMO

Well actually it is different. Modern UI apps are Windows 8 only.

Universal Apps is an evolution of WinRT where it runs on Windows, Windows Phone, and if Microsoft wants it: XBox One.

Well that's bullshit. The only reason why mm friend even considered (and later bought) a Windows tablet was because it could run x86 programs on the desktop. This essentially makes 8" or less tablets useless (because really, the app store sucks ass).

Hopefully there will be a way around this but I don't think we should have to modify the OS to include things Microsoft themselves removed.

7inch or less. And only if you clean install. If you upgrade, you have your desktop.

That's a huge IF.

Have they said anything about why they are doing this? It just seems so unnecessary.

Guess this means my upgrade to an 8' monitor is a bad idea.

Yes. See my first post.

Once again, 8inch is fine. 7inch you won't have.

you probably say 7 in or less in title seems alot of people are confused.

Anyways under 8" I dont see a problem wit this at all...good luck using windows on a touch interface with anything less then 10..much less 8. I struggle using windows programs with touch on a ...14" device.

Yes. See my first post.

I don't see an explanation in that post.

By the way, if you don't have the desktop then I don't think you can edit the registry.
