Microsoft: The Comeback Kid

"Microsoft's revenue grew 8% during the final three months of 2015, despite Windows sales tumbling 13% during the company's fiscal first quarter."

It seems like over the past decade Microsoft has been on its way out, but with a new strategy and a new CEO things seem to be turning around. As a consumer I love the new Microsoft, with the free Windows 10 upgrade coming out later this year and innovations into new markets that would likely have been shunned by the old school company( Spartan/HoloLens  :D ); not to mention the fact that I think my Surface Pro 3 is my favorite tech device I currently own. To me, it looks like MSFT could be coming back stronger than ever! I may even get a Windows 10 phone on my next upgrade instead of android.

I don't hate Microsoft as much as I love Apple, and Windows 10 seems genuinely nice (I'm running the TP right now and don't have any issues), but my one gripe is that Windows 10 is free for a year...

And OS X has been free forever since 2012

If you get it for free it's free forever too.

no,no,no. You have 1 year to upgrade from 7 or 8 to windows 10, and then you get windows 10 updates for the rest of the life of the PC

I know that, but they still charge for it as a new liscence, and won't give it away free after a year.

"Microsoft's revenue grew 8% during the final three months of 2015"

The year sure went quickly.

OT : I'm liking Microsoft recently so I'm glad to see they're doing well, mostly liking them because of Windows 10.

To be fair, the price you pay for a Mac you'd expect free OS upgrades for the following decade. :P

I know it's not going to EXPIRE after a year, but 'free' is a bit misleading since it's free if you have a legal copy of Windows and redeem it within a year.

OS X is free for everyone, and doesn't use keys or copyright management at all.

And you get them!

Plus software you'd pay for as a monthly subscription in Windows (Office), or a few hundred outright.

Think about this, microsoft does not sell like apple do. Their OS' are embedded in their own devices. So they give it free to those who own that said device. As for microsoft, they only sell the OS. They don't own the whole PC market. They'd go bankrupt or lose some if they give out Windows 10 free to everyone. That's why they are giving it as a free update from genuine Win7 and Win8 users.

I don't buy this 'they only make software!' argument.

When did ״Free" on PC became so limited? You know as well as I do what to do when your Windows expires. ;)

You were referring to OS X, I am referring to windows. Don't you get it? Yes, apple OS' are free only because they are embedded in the device. Unlike Windows, it is sold as a stand alone OS. Only retailers are offering devices WITH Windows. You get it?

They own a stake in Dell, and not very much of it. They do not own dell.

the fact that they are giving it away for free for a (very generous) limited time period is much better that what you make it say so, also Windows has been free for almost a year now, on low end devices, phones and some tablets products

Another coments you made are also very one side, osx is free but it does has some form of protection, you can't install it on non apple hardware without some work arounds, and one of those being buying hardware specifically for it, there's a reason they are called HACKINGtosh

Yes MS now sells hardware, which got OEM's very pissed, one of them was very angry with surface (i think it was hp but I'm not sure) and later after the nokia acquisition, Samsung got pissed and demanded some form of compensation, right now their hardware business sells very niche products, a surface might not be for everyone but for those that do, its a pretty compeling device, their phone hardware is the only thing keping Windows phone alive, because before the nokia acquisition it provided 80% of the hardware, if it wasn't for that their push for mobile would be dead, and imo i hope Windows 10 on phones brings the platform to have features that puts in par with android and ios, the market would benefit if we had another big mobile platform

this is one of the greatest thing that has happened to me recently, and it happened on this forum, those involved have my eternal gratitude http://linustechtips.com/main/topic/198850-update-alex-got-his-moto-g2-lets-get-a-moto-g-for-alexgoeshigh-unofficial/ :')

Well more people using Windows means there are more theoretical customers for Office.

Microsoft took out a contract with Nokia to make phones for them and then can slam windows phone onto it, Dell isn't owned by Microsoft.

They did; it was bought back in 2013. Forgot about that!

And they're not PCs, but they still make a fair chunk of money (and Windows Phone and soon-to-be Windows 10 on Xbox still count)

XBox Consoles (The hardware) barely break even. They're essentially loss leaders. Microsoft makes a ton of money from XBox because of game sames and XBox Live subs.

I doubt Windows Phone makes any profit at all as a whole.

Microsoft cannot operate on the same business model as Apple does. Their ecosystems are totally different.

If they made Windows free for everyone forever, inevitably it would make Windows less good, as there would be fewer resources going into development.

Mac OS X is "free" in the sense that it is subsidized by Mac Computer hardware sales. You're essentially paying for OS X every time you buy a piece of Mac hardware. Microsoft does make a limited (Extremely limited, aside from XBox - which hardly turns a profit hardware wise) amount of Hardware, but nothing in the amounts needed to sustain Windows development costs.

Besides, every new release of Windows is always heavily discounted upon release (Windows 8 could be had for $20 for like 6 months after release). The cost of Windows was never an issue to me.
