Looking for a 3-4 tb external usb drive

I'm looking for a 3-4tb usb 3.0 external hardrive for a home server. The server will de an old acer laptop (i3-370m 4gb ram 640gb hdd) running freenas. It will mainly be used for backups and as a media streamer using plex. I'm looking for a drive that will both inexpensive and reliable.

You could purchase an external hard drive enclosure then purchase your own hard drive & pop it in.

This.

It will probably be quite a bit cheaper then getting and external.

This. I would throw a WD Red in there. Those are great drives and I've never had one fail.

Hello gorillacowman and welcome to Linus Tech Tips forum :)

Are you looking for a more portable solution or for something more like a DAS? I could suggest that you check out WD's external desktop drives and see if any of them would suit your needs: http://products.wdc.com/support/kb.ashx?id=2Z9cvo

As the guys mentioned, you could also get a regular internal drive and put it into an enclosure. WD Red is indeed a great drive designed for NAS systems.

So how much more reliable would a wd red be compared to a normal external drive?

WD Red is designed for NAS environments, streaming and 24/7 usage. It has additional features in its firmware (like NASware 3.0 and others) as well as different tuning of the drive itself, making it more reliable. It is also equipped with Intellipower which makes it quiet, cool and energy-efficient.

It terms or reliability, WD Red stands out among other drives when it comes to RAID arras. If you are using it as a single drive, I would say it is close to other drives that are designed for 24/7 performance.
