LayaR

Ok guys so...i am upgrading my pc for day or two,and i just need your opinion.i have 2 combinations:

i7 4790

ASrock h97 pro 4

Corsair Spec 03

(554$)

I5 4690k

ASrock z97 extreme 4

Corsair spec 03

(576 $)

So as you can see i7 will be cheaper but i need as good performance for gaming as posible.ofc i took better mobo for i5 since i would overclock but i wouldn't oc i7.So what do u thing what is better,oc-ed i5 or locked i7 for gaming. And i will save some pennys.thx and sorry for my poor eng

I would go with the i5.

i7 locked does't allow you to overclock.

The difference between an i5 and i7 is, i7 supports hyper threading.

EDIT: Go with the i7 if you don't care to overclocking & dump the extra money into your GPU.

blackshades on

They will be just as good in most games (besides a very select few). It doesn't really matter, hyperthreading and overclocking mostly balance out (game that support more threads will generally be a little bit better on the i7).

An overclocked i5 would be better for gaming (in most games); but you can also possibly find a cheaper Z97 motherboard. Something like an MSI Z97 PC Mate is usually quite a bit cheaper (has XFIRE support but no SLI support).

The i7 out performs the i5, so it's a much better deal.

True. It depends on whether or not he's gonna overclock. At stock the i7 beats the i5 by a touch, so for it being cheaper (not much of an overclocker) that's what I would go for.

Because most games don't use more than 4 threads anyway so 4 faster cores vs. 8 slower threads when a game can only use less than 4 (some can use more, but most can't).

Also, MSI Z97 PC Mate is blue, as is MSI G55 SLI, and MSI Z97s SLI Plus.

If you are going to OC the i5 is the easy pick for a gaming only rig but if you don't want to OC I would take the i7. Although If you wanted to save some money and didn't want to OC you could consider a locked i5 setup and put the money into a GPU if you were planning on buying one... i7s are hard to recommend if you only game IMO.

The OP just needs to keep in mind that oced i5 wins against a locked i7 in games because most games dont use more than 4 threads.

You would have to decide how serious you were about streaming/editing and if its worth the price to you, for basic/casual editing the i5 would be fine and when streaming you can use Intel quick-sync or Shadowplay with an Nvidia card (not sure if AMD has an equivalent) but at lower bitrates x264 CPU encoding does tend to be better quality.

IMO with a gaming focus and/or casual streaming/editing I would go with either an unlocked i5 or locked i5 + some spare cash but if you were serious about streaming/editing you may find some benefit to having a i7.

If you are not really into overclocking, just get an e3 1230/1 v3 xeon ( Its basically a locked i7 priced like the i5, also no onboard graphics )

nvm

i would pick the i7 all day long personaly.

Look if the xeon E3-1231V3 would be cheaper it's the same CPU pretty much and often cheaper.

I think iwill get i7 since it is cheaper and i have more "cores" for anything in future.I don't care for 2-5% performance boost but i care for 100$+ more for that few percent.ps can someone post i5 4690k oc-ed around 4.4-4.5 and i7 4790? That would help me a lot

the i7 will last you longer IMHO...it depends where games are going but just about every games that launched in 2014 use more than 4 CPU threads if you happen to have them...IMHO that says a lot about the future as well...the new consoles are out now and they have multi-thread chips inside...directx12 and windows 10 are also around the corner and those will also greatly improve performance on multi-core (multi-threads CPU's)...a lot of people in the i5 bandwagon, i'm not one of them and i love my processor, when i turn HT off in my bios the system is not as responsive and some of the more demanding games won't run as smooth anymore even with a noticeable overclock.

All i can say is do your own research and go with what you feel would be best for you...some will think that 4 threads will be enough for a while provided you can get a substantial overclock...others think that 6 or 8 threaded games will become the norm (it already is honestly) so go with what you feel is best for you...if you think you'd have more fun learning CPU overclocking maybe you'd be better with the i5, if that is not something you are interested about than hands down the i7 would suit you best.

Good luck!

Thanks a lot bro this helpt me a lot.that is just what i was thinking cuz hyper threading is more and more used so it may give me some extra power in future

Is it worth getting a I7 4790k not for OCing but gaming and streaming/skype?
