Windows 7 £18.38

That's an attractive price, considering you can upgrade for free to Windows 10 to it...

Yeah but you still have to pay for the upgrade after the year.

didn't they clarify that you have a year to update, and then you get it forever?

The upgrade is free for a year, but after that time you have to pay for it and own it forever.

Yeah, these keys are OEM, so pretty much useless if you want a legit system.

I thought the upgrade was free to users for 12 months, and after 12 months NEW users will have to pay, existing users keep the upgrade free

No, they clarified that you get to keep it forever.

EDIT:

This is more than a one-time upgrade: once a Windows device is upgraded to Windows 10, we will continue to keep it current for the supported lifetime of the device – at no additional charge.

I really don't see why they would just give away the OS when in the past they would charge ridiculous amounts of money for Windows.

Some people say it's to make up for the horrible Win8 launch.

Added link to source in my post, btw.

Because of w8 people are reluctant to upgrade, they need the install base, a free upgrade gets people off Windows 7 (which is no longer supported for major updates, and probably costs money to maintain etc)

Makes sense for them to get users to W10, and in 12 months any people buying new laptops etc will have to buy a new licence (or have one included in the price from the store)

2: No, Win8 release was horrible - the reason why we now have Win 8.1 - which is less horrible.

Because they can. I'm surprised people still think that about the free upgrade thing.

If I were to upgrade from WIn8.1(Pro?, Upgraded from Windows 8 Pro), to Win10, would it keep all my settings and such like desktop data and saved passwords?

Perhaps they might release SPs with features and technologies but those would be for money?)

The upgrade is free for a year, but after that time you have to pay for it and own it forever.

I think your wording is causing confusion.  There is a 1-year upgrade-for-free window.  Upgrade during that year, and you are set for life.  Upgrade at some point after that window, and you have to pay.  You're suggesting that one can upgrade for free in the first year, but after a year passes, the same person has to pay for the upgrade. Something like a free 1-year trial period.  That's wrong.
