GTX 980 in a PCIE x8 slot

davidst95

Hi,

I have a Gigabyte GT Z97 motherboard and two GTX980s.   It has two x16 slots and two x8 slots.  Right now I hve one video card in the first x16 slot and other other video card in a x8 slot.   I didn't put the second one in the other x16 slot.   I thought the extra spacing in between them would give the cards more airflow.   I was reading the motherboard manual and it says if I use two video cards it is recommended to use the first two x16 slots.

I'm not sure if I should move the second card to the x16 slot.   Does the x8 slot limit the performance of the card?   Is there benefit in having the cards not right next to each other?   I hope this all makes sense. :-)   Thanks.

David

If it's PCI-E 3.0 x8 (which it probably is) it'll be okay.

Any unknown button should be pressed even number of times.

Should be fine where it is, I doubt the 980 can use the full bandwidth of the 8x anyways.

X8 3.0 = X16 2.0

It'll be fine
