Upgrade to PS4, or build a new PC?

TwOne
Go to solution Solved by TwOne,

I understand your dealeo and I'm not going to make a suggestion either way. However this I didn't understand.....

Why is this a bad thing? I usually find myself in the reverse position where I delay upgrading because I'm always looking just over the horizon. My most recent build I'd had been semi-planning for almost two years and by the time I did eventually convince myself to bite the bullet I ended up something that performed quite a bit better. A year is the difference between getting a card that runs a game at 40fps and one that runs that same game at the same settings at 60fps and with the fans spinning slower.

Well, I usually plan stuff out far in advance, or not at all. And I hate ruining my own planning, since it's hard enough to get it right. In that case I can better say I got diagnosed with Aspergers.

But w/e, I guess I got this cleared up. I'll save up for a PC, a year long, then around christmas I'll look how much I have, plan a build around that budget, and then get some sweet deals at Black Friday/Cyber Monday. Then, I can always choose to upgrade the next year. I'll take the headphone question to another thread, for now, this mess of a thread can be closed.

Hello,

So, I've had the idea to sell my PS3, because I don't use it a lot, and it's getting outdated.

Now, I'm facing the choice of: building a PC (€900-1200), or going for a PS4 (~€400).

My situation:

I'm currently 17, and have a parttime cleaning job for 4 hours in the weekends, and additionally in the vacations (I might actually resign and look for a better job).

and currently looking for a job. I recently got resigned (damn it), so I don't know if I'll be able to make enough money so far.

According to my calculations, I will make at least €850 in a single year. This makes me think saving up for a PC won't be a sensible option, because saving up for a decent one takes too long, and by the time I'm done saving, new hardware would've been released.

I think I can sell my PS3 with games for €100-150 (it's still in a very decent condition), which I can also use towards the PS4/the build, but I need to buy new headphones as well, since my set is currently falling apart.

I also have a laptop (€800, see below for specs) which I use for school work, but it can run quite a few games. The games I can't run/exclusives could be played on PS4 then. I'm not planning to do Twitch stream (thanks Dutch net-infrastructure), but I want to upload a random gameplay moment once in a while.

So, what would the LTT forums do in my situation? I created a poll.

Laptop specs:

MSI GP60-2PE Leopard with:

Intel Core i5-4200H 2.8GHz (2 Cores, 4 Threads)

8GB DDR3-1600 RAM

GeForce 840M 2GB DDR3

750GB HDD (additionally can add a mSATA SSD)

Windows 8.1 64-bit

Thanks,

TwOne

Why not just get a case for 35-50 bucks and save some money and get cpu cooler such as 212 evo?

Because, dat stock cooler though.

And 520w is probably not recommended for a 290 would rather go for a 550w psu from a more known brand.

Stock cooler is fine , i have one .

Low rpm low temps.

It seems to be really loud and temps around 70 degrees load.

But It might have been a different cpu, all I remember is that it is a locked intel cpu.

Edit: I am pretty sure it was a locked i5.

Don't forget to follow your thread ..

Keep in mind that this is mainly a computer forum so most people will say pc gaming over console gaming.

And don't make a build unless there is 3-7 days before you are gonna buy it since prices are constantly changing.

Welp, this might not've been the best place to ask for a serious unbiased opinion, but then again, where on the internet can you?

@zappian They don't look too bad, but I don't live in the United States! It would still take ages to save up for stuff like that, and by that time, stuff has changed quite a bit.

@SimpleG Did you even read the post? I figured there could be a guy saying 'Xbox One', but I didn't expect someone that dumb/trolling like that.

Also, inb4 console peasant posts, I did start out on PS2, but I have ALWAYS owned some kind of PC and a PlayStation (well, not always, but since I was 10). I think it was just great to have the best of both worlds.

Depends on where it is cheapest, but I use http://tweakers.net/ to find the cheapest stores.

Well, I just lost my job (great), so 'The Build' will be a goal further away. Atleast I have some OK peripherals.

List of peripherals I already have:

Cheap PS/2 keyboard (could definitely be replaced)

Logitech G402 Proteus Core mouse

SteelSeries QcK+ mouse pad

Tritton AX180 gaming headset

Samsung T22C300 21,5" 60Hz 16:9 5ms Monitor/TV (Has VGA, HDMI, RF, USB, Component, SCART that jazz)

Iiyama Prolite E1700S 17" 60Hz/75Hz 4:3 2ms Monitor, used as second monitor (VGA/DVI-D, dat response time tho)

I'm looking to replace my Samsung monitor/TV with something that has 144Hz and DisplayPort in case I'm going to do 'The Build'.

But, for sure, I'll replace the Tritton AX180's soon with a headphones + Zalman clip-on combo. Suggestions for under €100?

What I'm looking to play is Counter-Strike: Global Offensive (settings don't matter, as long as I can push 144fps, which my laptop ALMOST can do), and maybe explore some more in PC gaming (currently interested in Battlefield 4/Grand Theft Auto V, but I want to get good at CS:GO)

If I'm going with the PS4, I will play my favourite exclusive series, Gran Turismo (when it comes out), as well as games I can't run on my laptop.

My resolution is 1920x1080 on the main, 1280x1024 on the second monitor.

It's very, very rare that planning a build well in advance goes to waste. I had an active list going on PCPartPicker for again, a couple of years. Every other month I'd change my mind about what I wanted out of my motherboard and case but the rest largely stayed the same. When a new CPU or GPU came along within the price bracket I was aiming for I'd virtually upgrade my build. As SSDs got cheaper I'd shuffle that money somewhere else or play with the idea of a bigger SSD. But the basics idea of it stayed about the same.

Just keep up with the tech news, read benchmarks and so on. See what components are worth spending more on and which ones aren't. Then when you do get around to actually building your PC you'll be better informed.

To be honest. Buying a console will bever be a bad choice. It's simple and somehow console's exclusive games usually better than PC games.

I've been a console gamer for a long time until PS3. Now i'm using a PC with GTX 780 and i have a gaming laptop which is an msi gost pro 3K. But still i plan to buy a PS4 because of it's exclusive games such as uncharted, gran turismo, etc.

So, it's totally your call buddy

If it's going to take a year for you to get a PC then I'd just get a console. I have a PS4 and a PC and they're not that different. Yes, the PC is better, but it's also much more expensive, and the hardware won't last as long.

"won't last long" is totally depends on u buddy. If u can't control yourself. Your hardwares won't last long.

How many people use hardware that came out around the same time the PS3/Xbox 360 came out? Very few

How many people still use PS3/Xbox 360s? Loads.
