Do I need G-Sync with GTX 980 SLI

davidst95

Hi,

I currently have a ASUS 28 inch 4k monitor.   I'm looking at getting a second monitor that will better at gaming.   Is it worth paying more for a G-Sync monitor if I already have 2x GTX 980s in SLI?   I'm looking at the ASUS 27 inch PG278Q.   Thanks!

wait for the 4K version of the Asus G-Sync monitor

that will be worthy for your dual 980s

Thanks for the reply.  I was looking at the upcomming Asus 4k G-Sync monitors.   I think it's an IPS and it'll only run at 60mhz.  (I could be wrong)   Is there a benefit of having a monitor running at 144mhz and G-Sync?   Thanks.

I'm in the same boat as you at the moment! :) From what I've heard 144HZ does a lot for the perceived smoothness of your games, and may even pose a competitive advantage. I'm heading down to my local Tech store tomorrow morning to check out the PG278Q and make my final choice.

EDIT: Yeah, the new Asus panel is 60HZ but I wouldn't imagine that being a negative, especially due to the fact that modern games @4K are going to be a bit of a challenge to run. I think I'm personally going to grab the PG278Q~I think the 144HZ bonus will be nicer than simply having a higher res screen, all down to personal preference I'd imagine- lightning fast games or beautiful visuals. In your case, dual 980s should easily be able to hit that 144HZ mark on most games @1440P, however (something to consider).

the reason why 4k and G-Sync makes sense

is because the fps for 4K ultra is bouncing around 40 fps

with g-sync, the stuttering effect wont be felt

Thanks for the responses.   I guess I need to do a little more research.   Hopefully the Asus 4k G-Sync won't be too expensive.   I think Acer has out a 4k G-Sync now.

Haha, since the PG278Q cost $800, I'd imagine the new Asus panel to cost nowhere shy of $1000+ :(

Sure thing. I've been looking at it for a while now~ finally stocked it here in Australia. I actually really wanted to SLI my 980s as well, but due to mITX that isn't possible. I'm hearing rumors of a new NVIDIA launch later this year~ hopefully a 980ti or new Titan, and I'll most likely swap out to one of them to tackle 1440P easier, or I'll have to go back to the ATX form factor! :)

Asus is going for IPS

The only issue with the Asus one is that it is going to be insanely expensive. Their ROG Swift is already £600, their 4K version is likely going to be closer to £1000.

Acer's 4K monitor does indeed use a TN panel, but it's actually a fairly good TN panel. While there's still a clear difference when you compare it to an IPS panel, it's very good for the price. For me 4K + G-Sync is the main time that either G-Sync or 4K makes sense.

indeed but some cringe at the idea of TN

Acer is aiming for value 4K with G-Sync

Asus is more on the premium side

if you can afford dual 980s

i dont think you cant afford the 4K G-Sync monitors :)

Haha thats a great point! But looking at the price of practically every Asus monitor, get ready for a hefty price tag OP! :D

Would you get the Acer 4k 60hz over the Asus 144mhz monitor?

All up to what you prefer~ Image quality vs Fluidity. I'd personally go 144HZ, I play lots of games, from Counter Strike to WoW, and I think that a higher frame rate would not only provide a competitive advantage, but also just an improved experience.

Over the Swift? Yes. Even with very powerful setups, 4K doesn't run 60FPS maxed a lot of the time, and G-Sync alleviates that. Around 45FPS feels as smooth as 60FPS and the drops below 60 are much less noticeable.

It doesn't make 30FPS feel smooth, but it definitely makes drop from 60 to around 40 feel less jarring and sudden.

Hmm, for me I'd say £1000 (probably what it's going to cost) is too much to spend on a monitor, seeing as even the ROG Swift is more expensive than Acer's 4K G-Sync model.

The stand is the only place that feels like Acer really skimped on with their monitor, the rest of it is pretty good. Obviously IPS would be nicer, and I think they have one coming out at some point.

Acer is also set to release their Model XB270HU IPS 144hz 1440p G-Sync Monitor in March. Pricing hasn't been announced, but I have to imagine it will be competitively priced against the ROG swift 1440p
