R9 290 or a GTX970?

Đỗ Đức Huy

Long story short, the place where I usually get all my PC stuff is having a crazy deal on an Asus R9 290 at 6 million VND (1USD is 21,000VND) and the cheapest GTX 970 is 8.4 million VND. I'm using a very small case- an CM elite 120 so I'm a bit hesitant on putting a furnace in there. So LTT members, what should I get?

i don't think both fit the length of the 120 Elite

look for shorter GPUs

Due to the GTX 970's memory problems I'm gonna have to say the R9 290.

ON A 7 MONTH BREAK FROM THESE LTT FORUMS. WILL BE BACK ON NOVEMBER 5th.

No, the 120 elite can fit an 7990 in there, it is in the press pic from CM.

The Asus R9 290/X have bad cooling for the GPUs and the VRAMs are exposed to nothing and without cooling

the VRAM will overheat and cause artifacts

look for other brand of R9 290X like MSI or Sapphire or PowerColor

I'd go with a 970 because of the efficiency and small case...

rig: i7 4770k @4.1Ghz (delidded), Corsair Vengeance 8GB 1600Mhz, ROG Maximus VI Hero, Noctua NH-D14, EVGA GTX980SC, Samsung 850 EVO 500GB, Corsair SF600, self-built wooden Case, CoolerMaster QuickFire TK, Logitech G502, Blue Yeti, BenQ GW2760HS

Definitely the R9 290. Much better value for the price, and doesn't have that pesky memory bug. Temperatures might be an issue though, I have no way to test this so if you could arrange a return in case it overheats you should do it. I would also make a more aggressive fan curve than the default.

I have one and no, that's not the case. I have even managed to overclock the ram of about 300 mhz without having overheating or crashes.

If you're going to get a 290 dont get the asus one. That cooler is so horrible. Honestly I would advise in getting the gtx 970 because it will get better temps and in a small case temps are important.

My brother has the Asus DCUII R9 290 and hasn't encountered problems with artifacts, he even has his memory OC'ed to 1325 from the stock 1200 I believe, although I won't deny they probably get toasty, they don't cause artifacts, at least for him.

It's very possible, I have no way of testing older cards.

Either way the OP would be getting a second or even third/fourth batch, wouldn't he? I remember when the whole vrm thing came up with this card last summer (I had just bought mine so I was kind of worried too :S) and I was surprised, because asus redesigned the whole pcb including the VRM to (supposedly) make it last longer and endure through worse operating conditions, which seemed kind of strange if then they went ahead and didn't properly cool it... after all, keeping the reference pcb and cooling the vrms better should be cheaper for them, right? It was probably a production bug they had with the first batch and then got solved.

You should go for the R9 290. It may be power hungry and run hot, but the aftermarket coolers take care of the latter problem and the non power efficiency is something bearable when you think that you are saving almost $100 which you can put to good use for similar performance.

Get a r9 290

“It would seem that Our Lord finds our desires not too strong, but too weak. We are half-hearted creatures, fooling about with drink and sex and ambition when infinite joy is offered us, like an ignorant child who wants to go on making mud pies in a slum because he cannot imagine what is meant by the offer of a holiday at the sea. We are far too easily pleased.”
