DirectX 12 Lies Dormant Within Microsoft's Recent Windows 10 Update

Yes, that says DirectX 12, and it's not a mistake. So what's there to be disappointed about? Well, there's the little fact that graphics drivers (and hardware, though the supported list is big) need to implement DX12 support in order for that part of the API to trigger -- and that's just one half of the equation. Our apps also need to have DX12 support, and I anticipate that given Futuremark's recent demos (one of which was even shown off at Microsoft's event last week), 3DMark will be one of the first to come out to tout support.

Now all we need is drivers.

not exactly shocking news.

i hope dx12 is useful, being the one directly after 11 (which is finally pretty much adopted) i feel it will take a while to become used widespread.

Doubt we'll be getting drivers until the consumer release but it's nice to see none the less. Not really surprised though to be honest, we're not that far off from full release at this point so not having DX12 in there at all would put the QA team on a hell of time crunch if it weren't in there already.

Look at how many damn games within the last 5 years still only use DX9/10, i seriously hope this gets adopted right away by almost everyone...

I think this time it will be a bit different. I'm speaking from what I've read and a lot of personal observations so I may be wrong (anyone feel free to correct me too) but this is my theory. We were stuck on DX9 for so long because A, the xbox 360 used a very thin version of the API, and B the Vista launch tanked. So game developers were porting from a version of DX9 and were either to lazy, costly, or didn't find the need for Vista's market share to warrant a DX 10 version. Windows 7 got a pretty heavy market adoption which made PC exclusives and better devs consider a proper DX11 version. The other devs just continued to recycle from the version they already made for the 360. The reason I think this will be different this time is that the Xbox One will also be getting DX12 so recycled ports are still using it at the core and Microsoft's push to move everyone to 10 by making it free for 7 and 8 users will probably skyrocket adoption even if the OS is meh.

11.3 will probably be most widely used than 12 just because of ease of use. Hopefully AAA developers will use 12 instead because they have the know-how to make it work well.

as i recall if u just use a game engine like UE4 u get DX12 out of the box

but if some one wants to make his own engine its gonna be a hassle to implement dx12

not sure if thats true

I just hope all the cool games use 12.

i think most games wont fully use dx12 features like raster and culling etc since it would require a dx12 card

but that doesnt really matter all im looking for are higher draw calls which will work with all dx11 cards

i REALLY would like most games to use DX12 it means i can keep using my 2600k for another maybe 8 years until it will be a bottle neck

hope my board lives that long :P

You dont get it or you do but unless a part/or parts of windows or any 3rd party software/game on your computer is coded with Dx12 enable those features does exactly nothing, its not like enableling dx11 from dx9 in a game for example,or enabling shadows or AA.Its uselss in short.

And thats where the biggest problem lies with any api or new features, implementation and adoption. It will lack for sure, very few games will prolly come out in 2016+ that really need performance and have $$ to pay their talented coders to learn and develop games with dx12 code, like DICE's battlefield 5.

Well, I see it being aquired very well cause of what's been presented so far and also since Windows 10 looks to be awesome and being molded to be 'the windows'.
