You don't need a waterblock to install a backplate I don't think. At least, I don't see why having a stock cooler would prevent you from installing one. It should just be held on with the existing screws that come with the card.

The existing screws could be too short to go through the backplate and firmly attach to the stock cooler holes.

So I'm guessing the backplates come with them then? I've never had a custom loop, but I have seen enough videos to know all the basics.

I can't imagine why ever not, maybe as stated the default screws are of insufficient length but in that case I'd reckon some replacements would be provided!

Edit: Unless perhaps the backplate somehow conflicts with the frame of the heatsink itself.... Hmmm...

Do not  as I  do, and  not  as I say. Instead do as you may..

I think I know which one you're talking about a I downloaded the direction for installing it . You need a washer and nut and on my gtx gigabyte wf3 970 the holes for the backplate are already there and the on,y other thing you do during install of the backplate is to put on thermal pads that they give you in the box.
