GTX 970 Issue - "No Input"

IcySploit

I'm going to really quickly write this update. I replaced the PSU on my rig and that turned out to be the issue. Apparently it worked for a few weeks and then stopped working. Thanks everyone for their help.

Hey guys!

I know that a post like this from a newcomer may not be well received, but I've been meaning to register for a while so figured now would be a good time.

Regardless, I'm having an issue with my MSI GTX 970. On Wednesday I was playing Battlefield without issue, and then all of a sudden my monitor said "HDMI no input." I did some troubleshooting and essentially I cannot play any game. Whenever I launch a game, or even the Heaven Benchmark, I see the intended result for maybe half a second and then I get "DVI/HDMI/Whatever no input" and have to force restart my computer to get the display back. I can do things like watch YouTube and browse forums without issue but the second I go to play a game I get "no input."

I saw on the NVIDIA subreddit that there's an issue with the VRAM allocation. I ran the executable found within this article to see how it went attempting to see if it was indeed the VRAM issue, and I got some text displaying then got "no input."

Can I chalk this up to the "VRAM issue"/"the issue affecting all 970s that NVIDIA is saying isn't VRAM" or is there something else wrong? I appreciate the help guys!

Doesn't sound like the vram issue but an entirely different issue. What are your temps? Are the fans spinning?

Case: NZXT Phantom PSU: EVGA G2 650w Motherboard: Asus Z97-Pro (Wifi-AC) CPU: 4690K @4.2ghz/1.2V Cooler: Noctua NH-D15 Ram: Kingston HyperX FURY 16GB 1866mhz GPU: Gigabyte G1 GTX970 Storage: (2x) WD Caviar Blue 1TB, Crucial MX100 256GB SSD, Samsung 840 SSD Wifi: TP Link WDN4800

Temps are no different than idle according to the MSI Afterburner: http://prntscr.com/5wx6ai It stays at 37C and doesn't move from there, however it does go up when I do something graphically intensive.

I have yet to open up my case (as I have to move it all the way downstairs to do so) but intended to do that today so I can get back to you on the fan spinning part a bit later.

Edit: are there any logs that could possibly help? Ex a crash report or something? My entire PC doesn't shut down, I just lose input when this happens, thus the thought that there may be log files somewhere.

Edit 2: May be worth mentioning that I haven't modified any settings - everything is the same as the factory defaults. In addition, at first I had an issue where I didn't have input but then had to plug in the second power supply cord and that fixed it, however I had no display at all when that was the issue. Again, I can take some pictures and post them here when I go ahead and open up the case later on.

hmm, do you have your monitor and PC plugged into a powerstrip? If so try plugging them both directly into the wall instead. Also dont be afraid, we love newcommers!

My GTX 970's Displayport also died. Right after I got a memory allocation error in Arena COmmander. Not sure if related, but I suspect it is.

I'm currently hooked in via DVI. I unplugged HDMI thinking it was the cord (as I had an issue with another HDMI cord I tried) but it still happens here.

I never saw any error messages as far as memory allocation. Again, the display just blanked out as if my PC was off. Very interesting issue, I appreciate the reply!

The PC is plugged into a surge protector type thing but that hasn't changed since I originally built the computer. http://prntscr.com/5wxbrj

Edit: The "something else" is my wireless headset receiver power.

Glad you guys don't mind newcomers! I lurked for the longest time. :P

Edit 2: Noticed that it looks like the surge protector is falling out of the wall, I promise it's not.  B)

but has the hardware changed? You may have upgraded and now need more power and the surge protector doesnt like that

Nope, nothing hardware wise has changed.

Build for whatever it's worth: http://pcpartpicker.com/p/QZx3dC

The case fans aren't installed as of right now.

Unfortunately not. My last computer was the Samsung Gamer Series 7 and the one before that I don't even remember what GPU it had. Thanks for the response though!

Any spare PCIe slots to try out?

Uhhh most likely yes. My memory isn't all that great and as I said I have to move the entire system downstairs to open it up and I can check then. Estimated time would be about two hours until I start taking photos.

Edit: I lied, I don't have another PCIe slot that I can use. :/

What's all occupying the slots? From what I see looking at the motherboard, the sound card can be in the top PCIe x1 slot and the 970 in the top PCIe x16 slot.

Like I said my memory's pretty bad but if I recall it's a spacing issue between my heatsink and the card. I'll take a better look when I open up the case later on.

Unfortunately trying that yielded no result when I last tried it. :/ Thanks for the reply though! :)

May need to just RMA the card :/

I actually don't have a sound card in there so I can try the PCIe x1 slot I suppose? Unless putting the GPU in the PCIe x1 is a bad idea?

Yeah, that's unfortunately worst-case-scenario. I'd like to try GodlyGamer's "change the slot that it's in" solution prior to RMAing it.

You can't, but you should have the second PCIe slot available, no? Either way, the very bottom one would work.

The very bottom is a PCIe x4 and cannot be used according to the 970 box.

In addition, we changed out monitors to see if that was the issue. I was able to run the Heaven Benchmark @ low settings on my old Asus monitor and the Samsung monitor I'm currently using can run the benchmark on medium without crashing, but high crashes it, where as when I first got the card I could run ultra no problem.

Any additional ideas?

Edit: We found that my PSU isn't outputting nearly as much as the GPU wants - not even half. Whoospie. Working on returning it and we'll see how that goes. No longer needs replies on this thread for the time being. :)
