Need help choosing nvidia card with build?

Go to solution Solved by TheSLSAMG,

Thank you kind advisor.

Man, now I wish I can replace my motherboard. I paid my buddy 1000 for this pc five monthes ago.

It sometimes freezes on Ghost Recon Phantoms strangely......

So Gtx 980 is best for now? :( Hmmm...

Should I actually get a new CPU and motherboard? I get the sidestepping but I really want a good motherboard and I recently started searching myself -_-

I feel stupid for buying from a friend like that but then he hasnt done much research either.

I hear intel i7-4790k is really good with gtx 970 or gtx 980.

Don't bother going for a new CPU and motherboard now, it's not necessary just yet. First focus on getting a new graphics card. The GTX 980 is currently the best graphics card, but the R9 380X is likely to be announced within the next six months. According to rumors, it's supposed to edge out the GTX 980 by a good amount.

$1000 isn't the worst, but you could have done a little better doing a custom build. You didn't do too bad, so don't beat yourself up about it.

The whole Ghost Recon Phantoms freezing thing is something I wouldn't know about.

Need help choosing a graphics card that works with this build? Replacing my r9 280x for a gtx 970 or above :) Will it work well with AMD?

Hold off on the 970 for now. I'd go with another 280x. Although that 9590 might be whats holding you back, not your gpu.

And any gpu will work.

Any GPU?

You made a terribly odd choice by buying what is essentially an overclocked FX 8320 that ruined the binning of the lower chips, but I'm not here to talk about that.

The GTX 970 and GTX 980 will work fine, any version. Or, you can make a real space heater and get a couple of R9 290Xes.

Anyways, I wouldn't upgrade if I were you. With that power supply I recommend picking up another R9 280X for CrossFireX :)

Lose the FX9590 and get a 4690k

He already has the machine, so that would be even more daft a decision than buying that CPU and board in the first place. The CPU, while being the worst possible enthusiast choice, is still powerful enough for gaming and rendering with little to no bottleneck of a single high end GPU. All he would do by getting a new CPU and motherboard would be side stepping.

The GXII is a lower end series unit, so I wouldn't be particularly comfortable running so much on it personally. We're talking a 220W CPU with two 250W GPUs and other parts, which already has peak consumption at or over the rated 750W.

Another one is better than 970? Shouldn't i get a better power supply for another 280x?

I usually play all the huge games. Shadow of Mordor, 250 modded Skyrim on Ultra High Settings, Ghost Recon Phantoms, and more recent games like Dead Rising 3 and going for dying light and all that jazz.

Binning chips is the process of cherry picking chips that can achieve higher clock speeds. The 9590 is essentially just an overclocked 8350 if I'm not mistaken.

He's also referring to the fact that 290Xs kick out a lot of heat. Having two will genuinely increase the temperature of your room by a fair bit.

Space heaters are used to heat an area of a room. The GTX 980 is currently the best single-GPU card on offer, with the GTX 970 and R9 290X being as much as 15% slower.

Binning is a process in which a CPU maker (I.E. Intel, AMD) takes the better CPUs off of the production line and makes them higher end CPUs. It's a little much to explain though, so I'd look up "silicon lottery" and "CPU binning" to find more info.

It's okay that you're an amateur, we'll bring you along the way and make you a pro ;)

Yeah, just realized he's using an FX-9590. No, don't do Crossfire. I recommend a R9 290X personally. powercolor pcs+ if possible.

It's rumored that this won't happen until the second quarter, which is at the least two months from now. Just so you know OP, he is referring to AMD's new GPUs which will likely be more powerful than the GTX 980.

In most games a 4690k is just as good as a 4790k. But a 9590 should be decent enough to get you through most games.

Ghost Recon might be a cpu dependent game as a 280x should be able to run it pretty well (at 1080p anyway).

Ok SO I should follow Linus's tip for the two way SLI guide?

Holy crap. R9 380X will be quite expensive. Should I wait for that? lol Or will that require more heat?

Thank you for the advice

I was a little afraid at first but this forum has a lot of helpful people. Thank you guys :))))

I'm playing on an old 2006 17.7" Dell monitor with DVI lol

Reason why I wanted Nvidia is due to the fact that some games like Farcry 4 for example has godrays and all that just for nvidia cards. Batman Arkham series is my favorite series and they have that physicsx engine or something.

I had a laptop with a gtx 640m and intel HD 4000 graphics. haha

PhysX is a pretty bad reason to choose Nvidia -- it's not that amazing. Also, please upgrade to a 1080p monitor before anything else

What effect does a 1080p monitor have I wonder?

Does it show more particles than my recent monitor?

I know about resolutions since mine is poor 1280x1024

Example like skyrim. Will graphics show better on a 1080 p monitor for screenshots wise?

1080p will have 60% more pixels (60% more screen space). Heres a good idea of the difference: Change your computers resolution to 800x600 and see the difference between 800x600 an 1280x1024. Plus, in addition to gainging a LOT of screen space you'll be playing at the better 16:9 aspect ratio rather than 5:4.

Oh my lord that was shocking....

Thanks for that advice 0_0
