2015 could see the price of 2XX GB SSDs drop as low as $70 by as early as Q3

Aniallation

http://www.kitguru.net/components/ssd-drives/anton-shilov/apacer-256gb-ssds-will-cost-less-than-70-in-the-second-half-of-2015/

Definitely interesting. As SSDs become more mainstream and manufacturing processes become more affordable, seems that SSD prices are still on the drop. The competition on the market of M.2 SSDs also seems to be heating-up, therefore, the prices are inevitably going to decrease.

General manager of Apacer Technology is confident that the price of 256GB solid-state drives will drop below $70 in the second half of the year. Other industry experts agree with the high-ranking executive and believe that low price of 256GB SSD will greatly help them to boost market share in the coming months.

256GB solid-state drives will cost less than $70, whereas 128GB SSDs will be priced at around $40, said CK Chang, general manager of Apacer Technology said in an interview with DigiTimes web-site. With SSDs becoming more reasonably priced, a wave of demand could be stimulated, said Mr. Chang.

The executive of Apacer Technology believes that thanks to shrinking manufacturing technologies, the cost of NAND flash memory chips will decline and so will their prices. Leading NAND flash makers are transiting to 14nm, 15nm and 16nm fabrication processes. Adoption of triple-level cell (TLC) NAND as well as vertically-stacked NAND will also help to make SSDs more affordable.

Mainstream laptops today utilize hard drives with 500GB capacity, whereas entry-level/low-end machines use 320GB HDDs. 500GB drives cost around $50 in retail. At present 120GB – 128GB solid-state drives cost $60 – $70, but these capacity points are hardly enough for today’s workloads. Many industry players believe that 256GB SSD are enough for mainstream laptops, but they need to get more affordable first. At present 256GB SSDs cost starting from $90 – $100 in retail.

While the price of 256GB SSDs is gradually decreasing, it remains to be seen whether 256GB is enough for notebooks. The capacity seems to be nearly okay for boot drives inside desktops (which usually also have capacious hard drives inside), but for many notebooks 256GB may not be enough.

They are already super cheap IMO, I recently picked up a 250gb for $90 around xmas, (Crucial mx100)

I use it for games and an 840 pro 256gb for the OS/othergames/programs, because I don't have an HDD in my system.

I may look into getting a m.2, but don't those take away PCI lanes?  ( I haven't really done any research about these yet since I wasn't planning on buying one, but if they get really cheap and I need another storage device, I may get one)

M.2 doesn't affect PCIe lanes for graphics card, as they use the chipset gen 2 lanes

Ok good, coz I was going to say if it uses PCI lanes, I can't get it as I'm already using all my lanes for my 970 SLI

Considering I picked up a 240GB Crucial M500 for $80 last year, I think this is very likely.

I could easily see it. Since I'm likely waiting another year until I build my next computer, I can only hope.

It shouldn't really be a surprise though. As technology advances things get cheaper.

I think 256gb is plenty for most laptops. I see laptops as more of a full fledged tablet. They allow you to do more on the go, and then when you get home/work you transfer files over to a desktop PC.

It isn't the same for every single use scenario...but there are tons of laptops that allow for tons of expansion. Most can do with 256gb easily.

Low expectations. Therefore if it's even better at that price, then horray!

I could use an upgrade from my 60 GB to a 256 GB. After installing Windows and BF3 I have like a whole 15 GB left.

I just got 2 M550 512GB in raid 0 for $420 (lel). but if that drops to $300'ish is for 2 500GB'ish that would be awesome.

I love my near 1GB/s read and write on my SSD's.

Fantastic! SSDs transform the user experience imo.

I want to bang my head on the table whenever I use a computer without one.

That would be a dream come true since I'm gonna buy some more SSDs later this year. Hopefully the 500GB sizes also drop like crazy.

Black friday (US and UK) is the best time to buy SSDs. Its a bit of a wait but well worth.

Good to see prices go lower for SSDs. I'm curious when will price/GB be equal to HDDs.

Hopefully they drop the Australian price by 20 - 30%   It's too darn expensive at the moment, especially the 500gb and the 1tb sizes :(

What the hey....
