Cable companies opposed to 25Mbps broadband

Nowak

http://arstechnica.com/business/2015/01/no-need-for-speed-cable-industry-opposes-25mbps-broadband-definition/

In a surprise to nobody, the ISPs are in opposition to competition and requiring to offer better service.

Netflix, for instance, bases its call for a 25Mbps download threshold on what it believes consumers need for streaming 4K and ultra-HD video content—despite the fact that only a tiny fraction of consumers use their broadband connections in this manner,

People in the early 2000's also didn't stream a lot of 1080p video.

This mentality the ISPs have adopted is what is going to keep us from getting better Internet, likely for a very long time.

"No one uses their broadband connections in this manner" - Well that's because a 4Mbps would utterly crap out and all you would see is a black screen if you tried to do 1080p streaming, pray to some form of higher power if you even attempt 4K on such a connection.

At the rate the current large ISPs in the US are acting, I think it's best for them to be demolished by smaller companies and Google, if they can manage to get fibre rolled out on a large scale for a decent price.

The ISPs in the UK are shit for the most part, but a lot of them have signed up to keep net neutrality in the UK. But in the US, most of the ISPs are shit and evil, at least ours are just shit and not complete money grabbing spawns of Satan xD

Haha, ain't that the truth. Here in Massachusetts the only "options" are Comcast or Verizon in most cities, but Verizon is capped at 1Mbps download while Comcast provides semi-acceptable service, so it's really only Comcast.

it depends on where you live. many places in northeast US have access to at least 25mbs. I have personally 50 down and 10 up. and guess what, hardly anyone is complaining. The prices are reasonable. The people bitching the most are the poor kids that dont want to get jobs.

Now with that out of the way, if you live in an area that does not have broadband, (the boonies)  then maybe you should consider moving. If you say hey stomplar fuck off with you, then feel free, but i say this, then deal with it. you chose location/isolation over convenience in the first place, thats why you live where you live, duh. If you honestly think a cable provider is going to spend hundreds of thousands of dollars just to get 1 customer you're out of your mind. I am on board with the cable companies on that front.

towns and cities here in this part of the state of NY where i live, just about everyone has access to highspeed. its the small group of loud bitchy people that get heard over the millions of satisfied happy customers living day by day and enjoying their services. Its easy to fight for the underdog, but it seems as if most folks are not looking at the big picture.

And I sometimes think this is slow for 33$. It also includes 100 minutes of good ol`d landline phone time. :D After you download 150GB`s though, download speed goes down to 3mbps and upload goes to 1 mbps. Not a huge deal for me , I don`t download games or movies everyday as some people do.

And this is some random German server.

We pay more than $100NZ a month for 10+Mbps download and <1Mbps upload with a 500Gb cap. Telecom has an option to upgrade to fibre cheap or free, except it's been a month and they still haven't upgraded..

I still cringe at how bad this is.... apparently faster than half the country.

My parents house in the middle of fucking no where gets like, 25 down, 2 up or something. And I live in the second largest city in my state. Doesn't help they connect use to an exchange that makes no sense... at all

Edit: At my old house there was an exchange literally 2 streets down from where we were. Nope, better connect us to an exchange several suburbs over. That's exactly what they're doing to us at my current house too
