Copying an OS to VM Ware Player

AustinTheIntern

Hello,

Is there anyway I can make an entire copy of my computer and turn it into a virtual machine in VMWare player? I have a new computer, but want to use the old one as well because it has files I can't move, so I'd rather move the entire system into a virtual machine.

Thanks!

Clone the hard drive to a VHD (virtual hard disk) and connect that to VMWare.

if you can pop thr drive from the old pc into the new one just to clone it to a VHD would be easiest.

ps. what kind of files are you having difficulties copying?

When in doubt, re-format.

Files that are proprietary to software I don't know how to transfer, and would rather not f**k up on.

Do you know where I can find this info? (I know I can Google it, but just wondering if you had any info. on the tip of your tongue, as it would be helpful.)

First, you open diskmgmt.msc (search in the Start menu) and create a Virtual hard Drive. It's in some men on the top. Select how big o you want it to be and chhose dynamically expanding, unless you want to wait for hours for it to create.

Then you would take disk cloning software like Acronis True Image, select yout old computer's hard drive as the source and the VHD as the target, and clone away.

Are you talking about a specific piece of software and you want to move data files created by said software, or are you worried about moving the software as a whole over? Because just about any software that you have to install (instead of just running an .exe from wherever) cannot be 'copied' over and would have to be re-installed on the new pc.

When in doubt, re-format.

Why not use tools made by vmware for vmware? http://www.vmware.com/ca/en/products/converter/

Use this. it works great.
