Lyrto ILLUM

Hey guys!

I thought I would post this up as someone might be interested in this ground breaking camera!

Well Here is the Lytro ILLUM:

Lytro_Illum.jpg

Doesn't look very special does it? Kinda sleek looking! However it is what is under the Bonnet which is very interesting!

This camera doesn't have Mega pixels. It uses Mega rays, 40 of them to be precise! That is because it is a perspective shift camera which uses the flow of light rays into the camera to expose the image! The perspective shift part means that you can take a picture and then decided later to refocus the image on something else... Similar to what the HTC one M8 has but using one single lens. Their piece of software allows you to look at the images and change the focus and aperture of the image after the image has been taken! This means that the quick snap, you took of your favourite band and realised it was just out of focus could be saved!

The camera is a equipped with a 8x optical zoom lens with f/2 aperture! F/2!! This lens is equivalent to a 30-250mm with a constant aperture of F/2! That is incredible! The lens is also a 1:3 macro lens! This means that you can get super high quality close ups!

The camera also comes with a touch screen display as well, allowing you to interactively choose your focus! The screen also shows you depth feedback allowing you to see what will be in focus and what will be out of focus at that aperture, this allows you to either move the focus or increase/ decrease the aperture to your liking!

The main disadvantage to this camera is a $1600 price tag! However some of you guys out there might still be interested in something like this (and have the pockets to pay for it too)! I mean it is an awesome camera and something to look forward to in the future when this technology becomes more mainstream!

Here are the exact specs of the camera:

  • Custom-designed 40-megaray light field sensor
  • 8x optical zoom lens (30mm-250mm equivalent)
  • Constant f/2.0 aperture across the entire zoom range
  • 1/4000 of a second high-speed shutter
  • Extreme close-focus macro capability
  • Combination of tactile-controls and smartphone-class, articulating touchscreen
  • Dimensions: 86mm x 145mm x 166mm; 940 grams
  • Hot shoe supports all leading flashes

Also here is a kinda long video which is more of a sales pitch but here you go!

Are you sure your thinking of the right one? This one has only been out for 7 months and has only really been in the press for about for 9 months...

Digital revs review was only 4 days ago too...

The shitty square one was very bad! Everything looked super soft! However this new one is much improved!

If the lytro could do perspective shift video it would be awesome! However it would have to do so much processing! It would have to frame by frame process the focus and aperture details or attempt to match the focus of the previous frames...

yeah it would need to record to SSD or something for the speed

This tech is nice, altough its still in its baby shoes, time will evolve it and hopefully make it a bit more practical

May the light have your back and your ISO low.

That's meh. Convert the Aperture to 35mm film too and the magic disappears.

What? You don't have to convert the aperture... The aperture is how wide the lens is open to allow light into

In this case its diameter is f/2 but f isn't really 30-250mm.

The aperture of the lens is actually F/2. It has a constant aperture.

It is a 8x zoom lens, an equivalent lens is a 30-250mm on a 35mm body.

@the pokemon kid

Do you know what the f stands for?

The F stands for focal length. However by making it "F/" it is referring to Focal length x Diameter of the lens. This then gives you the lens maximum aperture or maximum F-stop.

Im sure they would of worked out what it would be in DSLR equivalent to make things easier. Im sure they wouldn't just write that in their spec...

The F-Number is f/diameter of aperture

The diameter of the lens is irrelevant.

  • 4 weeks later...

the prototype of it came out over a year ago

Yeh, it was the shitty little rectangle camera. I think its a great concept which within time will become mainstream.

don't really care about these cameras.

Well I think this camera is perfect for people who dont really care about the taking of the picture. They just want a picture. For them to be able to refocus it, would save their holiday photos and many other family photos because they may lack the understanding (Care to learning how to use it) of using a camera.

My Dad is a great example. He used to do a lot of photography but now he could really care less about the rule of thirds or fixed apertures etc. He has gone from a decent DSLR to a compact because he simply doesn't care enough, he simply wants to press a button and get the picture.
