Sennhiser CX685 Review

 

             I recently purchased the Sennhiser cx 685’s for $40 cad at future shop on a $60 of sale (regular price $100). $40 seems to be a fairly normal price for them and that is the value I will base it off of. To start of I think that these are a great value. They come packaged fairly standard, and come with a cable clip, pouch, and 3 sizes of ear tips. These are welcomed additions to the value, but still don’t entirely make up for other features they are missing. For athletic earbuds they lack a inline control, and mic (inline mics seem pointless to me), however I again feel that they make up for it in value again. Features they do have are the wing clips, a decent cable splitter, fairly decent design and being water/ sweat resistant.

 

            They feel good in the ear, the wing clips allow the earbuds to stay fairly secure, even with violent headshaking. However the clips take some time to get used to as most of the time that area of the ear is never in contact with anything. The biggest drawback of these earbuds to me, is how far these stick out from the ear, if you at all planned on using these with a helmet or toque covering your head, don’t buy these. The fact that they stick out makes the helmet press the earbuds uncomfortably into your ear. But if you are using these without something covering the ears, they are one of the best pairs I can suggest at this price range.

 

             Now, the sound quality. Honestly, these are great. For a non-audiophile like myself I find the base nice and tight, if not lacking some times. The base does definitely not over power the mid’s and highs. I think that these buds are fairly exceptional for the price. From trying friend’s fairly similar priced earbuds, they are exceptional. I do suggest using a music player with a eq though to tune the sound for the best quality with these buds.

In conclusion, the feature set for earbud this inexpensive is great. I would have loved to see better tips however as I lost one of the tips while it was on the buds in my pocket. The clips, great sound and build, the price, and the feel out do the lack of a inline control and fairly standard ear tips.

yes, i was wearing them when skiing, one of the main reasons i got them, and they sucked for that. i could not hear others and they were constantly hurting my ears

Shame. At least you got a nice deal on them.

 

Also I would have thought that, as you said, in line mics would be a thing, so to speak on sports earphones.

Uncomfortably into the ear canal or just mashing into the ear itself?

The furtuer the speakers are into my ear canal the flatter the sound it will produce i find. I like a nice flat sound with some extra boost in the bass.
