i have a pretty old pioneer VSX-C300 my dad paid good money for back in the day, the contacts on the back are worn out beyond what any person would still use, but DAMN is the sound good. also, all the internals are in perfect shape, even after my dad's and now my horrible treatment.

Both are high quality product brands.Just choose the one that has the features you need and the price you want.

Comparing two similar models at a similar price will be almost identical.

Onkyo is also I really good underrated manufacturer, I remember a few years back I picked up a 7.1 system for $500 with all the speakers and it was really good.

Now the receivers cost that alone, just a thought.

But I've had Pioneer speakers in the past which sounded really good, never had a receiver though.

Both brands are good.

I've used several pioneer HT recievers, and still have one in my current system. I have never had a problem with any of them. I have never used any Yamaha components so I have no advice to give on them.

stay away from Onkyo receivers and they have HDMI issues.

besides that depends on the $$$$ they are all roughly the same the main difference is the  Auto Sound Calibration system. Best is prob Audessy XT32 then Anthem's version. rest fall far behind.

So my choice for a mid tier receiver would be either Denon or Marantz.

CD Transport: Oppo 105 > RCA: Morrow MA1 / HDMI > Processor: Primare SP33 > RCA: Morrow MA1 > Amplifier: Elektra Theatron 7 > Speaker Cables: Neotech > Speakers: Monitor Audio RS8
