Is the Galaxy S5 any good?

FruitBasketSilex

Hello, fellow LTT users.

I am wondering if the Galaxy S5 is any good. I currently have a Galaxy S3 Mini, which, frankly, I'm getting quite tired of, and its pretty slow. I have a need for speed when it comes to electronics, and I'm just wondering if the aforementioned phone is a worthwhile upgrade, or if there's anything else out there that would be significantly better.

I'm on the AT&T network, my dad still pays for my phone, and he wants to get me a new one. I know plenty about Desktops/Laptops, not a whole lot about phones.

Thanks in advance for your helps.

To put it simply,i like my electronics to perform as fast as possible, and seeing as I'm mainly into PC stuff, I'm looking at this from a component perspective, do you happen to know which has a faster CPU/GPU, and least software bog-down.

I mean useless shiz that runs in BG, Samsung has useless shit, I certainly know that, owning one, but it doesn't really slow it down that much. It was pretty quick when I first got it.

Overa, I think this fight is between the LG G3, sporting a 1440p screen, and 3g ram, and the S5, sporting a 1080p screen, and 2g of ram, but more sensors/features, and the touchwiz ui I'm used to thus far.

on the topic of useless shit, why do phones need 1440p again? and if you're used to touchwiz, you might as well just stick with what you know.

On the issue of 1440p: because more pixels = more beauty

(I know, I know, I just wanted to say it) but it does also have 3gb of ram, and that is three times as much as I currently have, and 1gb is a pain in the ass.

And I'm not against moving to regular android ui, nor do I mind staying with touchwi, I have no preference either way.

The S5 is bedazzling fast IF you root it and get rid of all the crap samsung has preloaded, or if you flash a custom ROM like CM or something

I am pretty determined to not root, as -->I<-- do not know of any inherent plus-sides, and it seems to be a highly risky procedure, with a minimal pay-off. And I'm not much of a gambler.

But first things first, which of these two phones, overall, would be best/fastest.

Have you considered getting an iPhone? They are usually on the top of most benchmarks and are really fast.

Do you happen to have an opinion on these two phones I mentioned?

Ok so heres the thing. Phones are not computers and will never run like a computer (YET) - I personally run a S5 for work and a Note 4 for my personal phone. The touchwiz UI is not bad at all. It functions like a normal phone. If you load up the home pages with widgets (pre-installed) it will slow down. I've seen screenshots of peoples phones that bitch moan and complain about their touchwiz but they have 15 icons running in their taskbar, using resources, pages full of widgets. Well no shit you're having a problem with all that running.

My note 4 blows most phones out of the water. Battery lasts 2 days with semi heavy use and GPS use.

I typically run no more than threw things at the same time, chrome, YouTube, and a game. Other than that I always close everything down after I use it.

Do you think the s5 is a good choice? Or would the lg g3 be a better choice?

I have rooted my phone, and to be fully honest, i have no idea exactly how i did it. I just followed a guide really closely.

Anyway, i'm just gonna say that the S5 has the ugliest smartphone UI i've ever seen. I can not understand why they like that awful blue with green so much. Also most of the features they advertise barely work, visually the phone looks cheap, and Samsung drops support for the phone as soon as they release their next flagship.

The LG G3 is a solid allrounder, though most people will tell you 1440p is overkill, and i also stand by that point. There's nothing the G3 is bad at, as far as i can tell. I would definitely choose it over an S5.

I'm kinda leaning towards the g3, but I'm not sure how much the 1440p screen restricts the speed of the device, seeing as the higher resolution you go, the harder it is to operate on. E.g. 720p vs 1080p vs 1440p vs 4k

S5 is a great phone. If you're going big like the G3, the Note 4 blows it away with an even better 1440p screen

Going on 6 hours with my Note 4 off charger - Used GPS for 35 minutes, played on instagram/facebook for a bit and watched a youtube video (8 mins) and am sitting at 91% battery which is pretty damn good IMO. I'll end the day barely touching 70%

People on this forum have a phone elitist complex - If phones aren't running stock, flat android ui the phone is not a good phone to them.

I prefer samsung phones for the dedicated back button. Phones with the buttons taking up screen space bug me

Mate Just wait for the S6 supposed to be significantly redigned but in saying that the current S5 is a great phone and there are a number of good options out there also like the M8 and if you in the states then I would definitely recommend the Motorolla Droid Turbo.

In theory a device with a 1080p screen on the same hardware would run faster than on a 1440p display. But i honestly never hear people complaining about the speed of the G3, and battery life has improved with the updates.

and i know samsung isnt bad, my dad has a samsung phone and is happy with it. he is just completely blown away with the amount of stuff pre-loaded on there, to the point he has to ask me to set things up for him.

i'm personally a moto G user, and i was pleased with the fact i get only the bare essentials, and get to choose the rest. (or not install if i dont need said thing)
