Completely different cameras A7 is mirrorless. D7100 has a mirror.

Sony should be better for video.

Nikon better for photos and Nikon lenses are cheaper.

^ That is without looking any deeper into them. I might be wrong.

i'd get the sony a7. if you prefer small cameras then its a good option.

personally, i'm more of a DSLR guy, so i'd get the D7100, but its a crop sensor. if i was to spend that much on a sony a7, being a DSLR kind of guy, i'd get the D610. (on sale on amazon body only atm)

if small cameras are your option, then go for it.

I would get the Nikon.

But it really depends on what you are doing with it.  For pure photography then I think the Nikon Is a pretty clear choice.

You could get a d7100 and a nice lens for the same price as the Sony.  Nikon has allot more lens's available than Sony does.

Take in mind that I'm a Nikon shooter and have never actually used the a7.  I have read and watched reviews on it though so I'm not totally ignorant.

So with US prices you can get

A7 with a 24-70 f4 for $2,500

D7100 with 24-120 f4 for $2,300

you could add a Nikon 35mm f1.8g for $200 and bring them equal.

I think your just getting more for your money with the 7100.  For photography at least.

i would personally get the sony a7. both are great cameras, that is just what i would choose. The short flange distance of the a7 allows for use of many different kinds of manual lenses. That is the main reason i would go the a7 over the Nikon.

2 very different cameras

A7 - Small, Full frame, great for using adapted lenses (mmm leica and canon L glass) video is ok,

cons , low bitrate video, moire and aliasing,  native FE lens choice is limited and expensive

D7100 - APSC, fast focusing, wide range of lenses, fast burst etc, more choices of native lenses

cons - large, crop sensor, heavy,

Desktop - Corsair 300r i7 4770k H100i MSI 780ti 16GB Vengeance Pro 2400mhz Crucial MX100 512gb Samsung Evo 250gb 2 TB WD Green, AOC Q2770PQU 1440p 27" monitor Laptop Clevo W110er - 11.6" 768p, i5 3230m, 650m GT 2gb, OCZ vertex 4 256gb,  4gb ram, Server: Fractal Define Mini, MSI Z78-G43, Intel G3220, 8GB Corsair Vengeance, 4x 3tb WD Reds in Raid 10, Phone Oppo Reno 10x 256gb , Camera Sony A7iii

I think cameras in this pricerange is more about preference than actual specs since I believe most entry, enthusiast-level photographers rarely use the full megapixels and features of these cameras.

I use the Sony a7 with Canon FD and Sony FE lenses (Mostle the Canon FD 55mm f1.2) and I love this camera.

I would suggest you go to a camera store and hold the camera to see which is more comfortable for you.

You can also read up on reviews to get your own opinion on them.

If you search for the camera on flickr and look at the pictures people take with theses cameras you'll see both will produce excellent image quality.

Are you upgrading from an older camera or will this be your first purchase?

well, what are you mostly planning to do with it? since both camera's are pretty diffrent in the result you get,

the sony will be better for video and light, while the nikon would be better for photography with cheaper/more lenses then the sony.

May the light have your back and your ISO low.

Hi,

I would suggest Nikon D7100..

Because it is Fast, 51-point autofocus system. Dual SD card slots. Large pentaprism viewfinder. Excellent control layout. Preserves details at high ISO settings. Shoots at 6fps. 1.3x crop mode available. Very fast startup. Vertical grip add-on available. Sharp rear LCD. Sensor design omits optical low-pass filter. 1/250-second flash sync speed.

  • 3 weeks later...

one thing the Nikon d7100 will always beat the sony at is birding, large focal lengths will always be better on the d7100 then the a7, sicne it is a APS-c you get larger focal length, has higher FPS. but if thats not important then, its like what they say ^ there
